Upcoming Pokémon TCG release, Trick or Trade BOOsters, is coming just in time for Halloween, and every card to collect has been revealed. Though the release was set for between September 1 and September 5 in the US and Canada, Pokémon’s Halloween TCG sets are already in stores. Because of this early release, the cards included in the sets are now being revealed.

Pokémon released the first TCG set, known as the Base Set, in Japan in 1996, and later in the US in 1999. The TCG came after the success of the Game Boy games, Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green. There have been roughly four Pokémon TCG sets released a year, with over ninety sets in total over the past couple of decades. Ever since the Base Set release, Pokémon trading cards have been a huge success. Collectors are eager to find old cards in high quality and keep their new cards in mint condition, in order to get cards graded and keep the highest value. How to buy and sell Pokémon TCG cards has drastically changed in the past few years, too, as old Pokémon cards become more valuable and Pokémon keeps expanding its TCG sets.

Holo Cards In Pokémon's Trick or Trade BOOster Bundles

All Pokémon TCG sets feature a select number of rares, and even secret rares, to collect. Cards which feature some kind of holographic effect are known as holo rares. Holographic cards, often referred to simply as holo(s), are some of the most sought after cards in any Pokémon TCG set. Since the 1990s, the amount of holo cards per set has drastically increased. During the early years of Pokémon TCG, collectors weren’t even guaranteed a holo in a pack, as the U.S. packs didn’t always contain a holo card in the rare slot. Now, collectors are guaranteed at least one holo per pack. Pokémon’s holographic cards have dramatically increased in popularity, as they were among the most featured in the Pokémon online card illustration exhibit. The upcoming Trick or Trade set is no exception to the Pokémon holographic magic.

While the Pokémon Trick or Trade set isn’t a traditional ten card set, collectors will still delight in the possibility of opening a special holographic card. Including rarity-level cards, especially ones that are holographic, is very important to maintaining the excitement of opening a pack of Pokémon cards for collectors. By including this in the Halloween Trick or Trade BOOster bundles, Pokémon is ensuring that trick or treaters, seasoned and beginners, will share in that joy and excitement of pulling a holographic card. While it might turn out that the Trick or Trade BOOster holo cards might be part of the Pokémon cards that aren’t worth lots of money, they are certain to make their mark on young fans.

Here is a list of every holo card being featured in the upcoming Trick or Trade BOOster packs:

  • Gengar
  • Mewtwo
  • Mismagius
  • Dusknoir
  • Darkrai
  • Chandelure
  • Trevenant
  • Gorgeist
  • Mimikyu
  • Hatterene

Mostly Psychic-type Pokémon, with some Dark-type Pokémon are exactly the Pokémon a collector would expect to see in a Halloween-themed booster. Including Pokémon such as Gengar and Chandelure show that Pokémon knows who the classic favorites, and best suited for Halloween trick-or-treating duty, are. Though it’s disappointing there aren’t any new art cards, at least there are holos to look out for. The Pokémon being featured in the upcoming Trick or Trade set are some of the most Halloween-esque Pokémon in existence. In fact, Pumpkaboo is among the best holiday-themed main series Pokémon.

2022 has seen the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield TCG releases Brilliant Stars and Astral Radiance, as well as the introduction of the new expansion set sharing the name of and inspired by the mobile game, Pokémon GO. The past few years have seen a huge uptick in interest for Pokémon TCG sets. Collectors have been scrambling all over the market to collect every card, an almost ironic ode to the Pokémon motif from Gen 1, “gotta catch ‘em all!” Demand for Pokémon products has led to Pokémon TCG shortages, store purchasing limits, and continuing scalper problems. With rising demand comes the risk of overproduction and the potential that Pokémon TCG cards losing a lot of value, which makes collecting more complicated. Seasonal sets like Trick or Trade BOOster are important towards making Pokémon approachable to kids and beginners again.

One could argue that, similar to the McDonald’s booster packs, Trick or Trade’s main goal is to encourage kids and non-collectors to start collecting Pokémon cards. By only selling in bundles of forty packs that are intended to be passed out on Halloween as treats to trick or treaters, it seems as if Pokémon is coming up with creative ways to re-shape the TCG industry in small, but impactful ways. Ultimately, the Trick or Trade BOOster bundles are perfect for the collector (especially with the possibility of pulling every card in one bundle) looking to expand their collection, the newcomer who just discovered the Pokémon TCG, or anyone wanting to hand out something unique at Halloween.
