Back in October 2020, Pokémon Sword and Shield added The Crown Tundra DLC that included Dynamax Adventures. In The Crown Tundra, Pokémon Sword & Shield trainers not only were able to catch the legendary psychic pokémon Calyrex with one of two steeds, but were also able to journey through the Crown Tundra’s Max Lair to complete Dynamax Adventures. Unlike regular Dynamax Max battles in the Wild Area, trainers are guaranteed to catch every Pokémon with any Pokéball in Max Raid Battles. However, if their team’s Pokémon faint four times, they are kicked out of the Lair and will need to start over.

There are a few other rules that help balance out the guaranteed catch rule in The Crown Tundra's Max Raid Battles, as well as the increased odds of catching a Pokémon Sword and Shield Shiny Pokémon, including Legendary or Ultra Beast Pokémon. As the scientist at the beginning of the DLC explains, the energy there is too intense for Pokémon not from the lair, like the trainer's Pokémon, so they must pick one from four randomly generated level 65 Pokémon to battle with. Trainers then need to clear three Max Raid battles in the Lair with a team of three other trainers to reach and then defeat the Legendary at the end without the team’s Pokémon collectively fainting four times. Additionally, only one Pokémon from the trip can be kept, and, once trainers pick the Legendary, they will be unable to encounter it again.

The other mode that trainers can play is Endless Dynamax Adventures. This mode is unlocked after players gain access to the “They Came From The Ultra Beyond!” adventure introducing Ultra Beasts to the Crown Tundra Max Lair and have completed three of the regular Dynamax Adventures. In this mode, trainers are unable to keep any of the Pokémon they encounter and are unable to leave the den until their Pokémon have collectively fainted four times. However, in exchange, they will receive a larger reward of Dynite Ore, an item only found in the Max Lair.

For the Legendary and Ultra Beast encounters in Pokémon Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra DLC, trainers have access to 47 total Pokémon between both versions of the game. While Sword and Shield both have Version Exclusives, trainers are still able to hunt for the other version’s exclusives if they join an Adventure that is hosted by a trainer using the version of the game they are not presently playing. For example, a trainer playing Pokémon Shield can catch Latios if they join an Adventure hosted by a trainer playing Pokémon Sword.

It is not required to beat Pokémon Sword and Shield's Champion, Leon, to gain access to the Crown Tundra and Max Lair. Instead, it is available even before they earn badges, once players unlock Wedgehurst Station. Players can access this area by selecting Crown Tundra from the train station NPC. Trainers without any badges are likely to lose to Peony’s level 70 team after exiting the train, but this does not force trainers to re-battle Peony. Instead, the plot continues to the Max Lair where they can use rental Pokémon for the adventure and encounter their first Max Lair boss battle against Suicune through the tutorial.
