In the Pokémon franchise, there are three gender classifications for the titular pocket monsters: male, female, and gender unknown. Many Pokémon species have a chance to be either male or female, while others, like the majority of Legendaries and Mythicals, always have the gender unknown classification.

While they are uncommon, there are certain species that are only either male or female. Both have several powerful species associated with them, making them valuable assets for a playthrough team. While some are available only in the post-game sections of certain games, they are viable at any point when a trainer can encounter them.

Sawk

Sawk from Pokemon lunging across the floor to attack

One of the strongest pure Fighting-types in the Pokémon series, Sawk can hold its own among many of the stronger Pocket Monsters in a playthrough. Though it is not among the fastest creatures in the franchise, it has a high enough Speed stat to act before a large number of the opponents it will face.

When it strikes, it does so with great force because of its fantastic Attack stat. Sawk has a bit more trouble defensively, but in this regard, it can usually withstand at least a single strike.

Tauros

Tauros splits into 5 separate versions of itself in the Pokémon anime.

Though its attacking power is not as great as Sawk's, Tauros is viable largely because of its incredible Speed stat, allowing it to move before a majority of its enemies. Defensively, Tauros has decent success against Physical attackers, but it struggles a bit against Special attackers. It can often take a hit or two of this kind, but it runs into trouble if facing an enemy of this sort for too long.

Its Hidden Ability, Sheer Force, makes it more offensively capable, strengthening attacks that have an additional effect, removing the additional effect in the process. The Pokémon cannot learn many moves with additional effects via leveling up, but if trainers are willing to use TMs, Tauros can be a worthy investment.

Nidoking

Nidoking in battle in Pokemon Sword & Shield

Nidoking's relatively even stat spread keeps it from excelling excessively in one particular area, but the slightly higher stat value in its Attack helps it to be a fearsome combatant, turning it into one of the best dual-type Poison Pokémon.

It is not as fast as Tauros, but Nidoking's more capable Special Attack gives it more options against opponents that may specialize in one defensive category or the other. Additionally, like Tauros, Nidoking has the Hidden Ability, Sheer Force, which can make Nidoking an even more viable attacker.

Grimmsnarl

Grimmsnarl's dual typing of Dark/Fairy gives it immunities to both Dragon and Psychic, two types that can deal incredible damage. This is a welcome feature because, while Grimmsnarl has a high HP stat, its Defense and, to a lesser extent, its Special Defense, weigh it down a bit.

Grimmsnarl has fantastic offensive capabilities, however, because of its Attack stat and access to some excellent moves, including its signature Spirit Break. Though it is not as high, Grimmsnarl's Special Attack stat is also reasonable, giving it more options in battle. It also has the Ability, Prankster, which boosts priority for Status moves.

Gallade

Gallade is in a bit of a complicated place. Its HP stat is underwhelming, as is its Defense stat. Because of this, one strike from a Physical move can be disastrous for it. However, Gallade's Special Defense is rather high, allowing it to take a decent chunk of damage from this category of attack. It also only has three type weaknesses, which helps it defensively.

Gallade is also faster than Grimmsnarl and can sometimes, but not always, act before opponents. With its excellent Attack stat, Gallade can sweep through a large number of its enemies using some of the fantastic moves to which it has access, as long as a Physical attacker does not take it out first.

Braviary

Braviary looks at something in New Pokemon Snap

Braviary has a fantastic Attack stat that helps to make it one of the best dual-type Normal Pokémon. It shares the same Speed stat with Gallade, making Braviary reasonable but not always reliable in that department.

Its defensive stats share the same only decent value, but its HP stat helps to make up for it. Also like Gallade, Braviary only has three type weaknesses, so it can survive a fair amount of time during most matchups. Like both Tauros and Nidoking, Braviary also has Sheer Force as an Ability option.

Thundurus

As a Legendary, Thundurus has a higher base stat total than most of the Pokémon that players will encounter in a playthrough. While it is not the best of its classification, it has some interesting features. Thundurus has two variations: Incarnate Forme and Therian Forme, each of which comes with its own benefits and detriments.

Its Incarnate Forme has incredible Speed and excellent Attack and Special Attack stats. Its defensive stats are decent but not incredible, giving it more of an offensive focus. Its Therian Forme lowers its Attack and Speed a bit, raising its Special Attack significantly in the process.

Tornadus

Like Thundurus, Tornadus also has two forms. The Pokémon ranks decently among the Unova Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, and though it does not have an offensive stat to match that of Therian Forme Thundurus, it tends to find more success because of its Ability, Regenerator, which it gains when in its Therian Forme.

This Ability restores a third of its maximum HP when it is switched out of battle. Along with this, it has an even better Speed stat than Thundurus when in this variation, allowing it to almost always act first in battle.

Latios

Latios preparing to attack in the Pokemon anime

Latios can easily defeat a large portion of its enemies because of its phenomenal Special Attack stat and capability to out-speed most opposing Pokémon. If it does not take them out in a single strike, Latios can run into trouble against Physical attackers, but it excels against Special ones thanks to its excellent Special Defense stat.

One of Latios's most concerning features, however, is the fact that it has six type weaknesses. On the other hand, its dual typing of Dragon/Psychic also gives it six type resistances, making this combination a bit of a double-edged sword. Additionally, its Ability, Levitate, gives it immunity to Ground-type attacks, making it a bit more viable defensively.

Landorus

Split image of both forms of Landorus

Like both Thundurus and Tornadus, Landorus has an Incarnate Frome and a Therian Forme. Because of its dual typing of Ground/Flying, Landorus only has two type weaknesses, though Ice is an extreme vulnerability for it. It also boasts immunities to Electric and Ground as a result of its type combination.

In its Incarnate Forme, Landorus has relatively even values for both its Attack and Special Attack stats, but in its Therian Forme, it sacrifices a bit of its Special Attack and Speed for a dramatically improved Attack stat, which makes it a destructive force.
