In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Paldeans are shown working in a variety of jobs, from the omnipresent Pokémon Centres to the region’s signature food shops and stalls. One of the most powerful employers is undoubtedly the region’s Pokémon League, with League Points even being an acceptable alternative to regular money. However, comments from various League employees reveal that one high-ranking League official is actually a terrible boss.

On the surface, Paldea’s Pokémon League seems to work like a well-oiled machine. A vibrant and diverse range of characters hold positions as Gym Leaders, such as the streamer Iono and chef Kofu. Much like previous titles, some Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Gym Leaders are easier to beat than others, but firmly in the middle of the pack is the Exceptional Everyman, Larry. And it is when battling Larry that a darker side to Paldea's Pokémon League begins to emerge.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet - Larry Proves Geeta Is A Bad Boss

A fan-favorite Gym Leader and Elite Four member, Larry makes it clear he is no fan of his boss, Top Champion Geeta. Plainly overworked, he even says his pay will be docked for too much talking before the Gym battle begins. Furthermore, he seems disgruntled at having to also work as an Elite Four member, especially with the Flying-type instead of his preferred Normal-type; a decision which was made by Geeta. It should also be acknowledged that this contributes to a common problem among Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Gym Leaders: they all have a second job, implying that their Pokémon League positions do not actually pay very well.

Geeta’s Actions In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Show Her To Be Irresponsible

The issues with Geeta do not stop there, either. During Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s post-game, the player is charged with helping to set up the Academy Ace Tournament. More specifically, in order to secure her participation, the player is asked by Geeta to inspect Paldea’s Gyms in her place. The fact that Geeta apparently feels no shame in delegating her responsibilities to a child, no matter how accomplished the player character may be, is obviously far from admirable. These inspections also expose various Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Gym Leaders’ own dissatisfactions with Geeta. For example, Larry comments this is perfectly in character for Geeta, while Ryme appears furious at Geeta’s avoidance.

It is clear that Geeta is far less popular among her employees than Nemona’s own starry-eyed view of the Champion would suggest. The Pokémon League holds a surprising amount of tension below the surface in Paldea, reflecting poorly on its chairwoman. Geeta is certainly not acting in a manner befitting her position, forcing her subordinates into uncomfortable positions and even shirking her responsibilities with ease. On top of that, many fans have criticized Geeta’s team for being remarkably weak. Geeta is far from being the best Champion in the Pokémon world, making what should be one of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s hardest battles into something of a disappointment.

While Geeta’s public image may be that of an admirable Champion, she is actually a poorer battler than one may expect and an even worse boss. Negative sentiment toward her is rife among the Gym Leaders and Elite Four, and she demonstrably avoids performing her duties properly. However, although the tensions created by Geeta add a notable amount of depth to the game world already, this could also be providing the setup for Geeta eventually assuming a fully antagonistic role in any future DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
