Game Freak's second update for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet revealed that the Generation 9 RPGs will finally show what happens when players catch a Pokémon in a Poké Ball. After months of silence, Pokémon fans got a deeper look at Gen 9 with a special Pokémon Scarlet and Violet gameplayer trailer on June 1st. While the footage introduced a handful of features such as the online co-op mode, the trailer also showed off the game's new battle animations which confirm a long-standing mystery about how Poké Balls work in the Nintendo series.

When Pokémon Legends: Arceus launched in January, Pokémon fans around the world were likely stunned when the game revealed Pokémon have the power to physically shrink down in size. According to a scene at the beginning of the game, Professor Laventon explains that Pokémon are able to make themselves smaller to fit inside of a Poké Ball. The second Pokémon Scarlet and Violet trailer appears to confirm the Legends: Arceus Shrinking Pokémon lore explanation, as various sequences actually show Pokémon inside of their Poké Balls for the first time.

Eagle-eyed Twitter users CaylaCapsule and SitheachE were the first to spot the major change in the game's animation, as the fans posted several still screenshots from the June gameplay trailer. In one image, the new Gen 9 Pokémon Pawmi can be seen in a tiny, bite-size form before jumping out of its open Poké Ball. The Electric-type then expands to its regular height as it gets ready to battle for Trainer Nemona.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have also updated the animation for Pokémon getting caught with Poké Balls. In the second gameplay trailer, the new Scarlet and Violet Gen 9 Pokémon Smoliv can be seen shrinking down into a tiny form before being transported into the Poké Ball thrown at it. These changes are a big departure from previous games, which didn't go into as much detail on how Pokémon actually fit inside of their Poké Balls. Gen 8's Pokémon Sword and Shield, for example, would just turn the Pokémon into a beam of light during a catching sequence.

While many Pokémon fans were surprised by the Pokémon: Legends Arceus shrinking Pokémon explanation, Game Freak looks to be solidifying the lore with new battle animations that show the insides of Poké Balls in the Gen 9 RPGs. The Poké Ball update isn't the only new feature being introduced, as the Scarlet and Violet's Pokémon Professors will also be version-exclusive for the first time. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will officially release later this fall on Friday, November 18, 2022, for the Nintendo Switch.
