The next Pokémon games, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, have been announced, along with their starters, but Fuecoco, the fire starter, shouldn't turn out to be a Fire/Fighting type. Although it's been some time since the combination was used for a starter, there is a worry that it could happen with the Gen 9 games. There's no telling what the final forms for Scarlet and Violet's starters will be at the moment, but hopefully, it will choose a different type combination.

Three other starters have Fire/Fighting as their final evolution's type combination; Blaziken, Infernape, and Emboar. Considering the fact that the new games will make nine generations of Pokémon, the combination doesn't seem like a big problem. It would seem that all Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's Gen 9 starters are currently only providing hints as to where the game is set and not potential types they could evolve into with their evolutions. The fact that all three of them were released in a row, however, and started in the third generation, was enough to cause concern of Fire/Fighting starters. It's become something of a meme, one made half with humor and half with nervous anticipation.

There's no telling at the moment what Fuecoco's final type combination could be, but hopefully it's not Fire/Fighting. Other possibilities may come from its inspiration, as well as that of the region itself. More recent type combinations could also offer hints, even to the types of the other starters' final evolutions if Pokémon continues some recent trends that it's set in the past few games. The Pokémon revealed in Scarlet and Violet's trailer offer little insight, but eagle-eyed fans may just glean something that most others are missing.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet - Fuecoco's Potential Final Evolution Type

Fuecoco from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

In Pokémon's Generations 3-5, each fire starter had a final evolution with the Fire/Fighting type combination. Since those generations spanned from 2003 to 2012, fans saw nine long years of Fire/Fighting starters, and they remember it well. Frustration-fueled memes flooded the internet in the time following Black 2 and White 2 and leading up to X and Y, after which the Fire/Fighting trend began to subside. Pokémon has gone in a new direction in recent games, but hopefully, it doesn't repeat its past mistakes and make Fuecoco a Fire/Fighting type in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

If Fuecoco's final evolution isn't Fire/Fighting, however, that raises the question of what it will be. Everything isn't known about Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's starters yet, so anything is possible. Its presumed inspiration, however, might offer a hint. Fuecoco bears at least a passing resemblance to a chili pepper, which is further reinforced by many fans' idea that the new region is based on Spain. It's possible that it's a Fire/Grass type, which has some interesting implications for Quaxly and Sprigatito's final forms.

It's also possible that Pokémon will continue a trend it set in X and Y. The starters have always had a rock-paper-scissors aspect to them, but Kalos introduced the same aspect to the final evolutions' secondary typing in addition to their primary, which means that Fuecoco could have Dark, Ghost, Psychic, or Fairy if Gen 9 does what the games leading up to it did. It's far too soon to tell, and it's another worrying piece of evidence that Fuecoco's final Pokémon evolution could be Fire/Fighting, but hopefully Pokémon Scarlet and Violet doesn't repeat this trend.
