One of the most adorable dual-type pocket monsters in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is Azurill, a tiny Normal- and Fairy-type mouse that evolves into Marill once a certain condition has been met. While the base form of its evolution family is not yet related to the Water-type element, Azurill prefers to live near bodies of water. More specifically, Trainers can encounter Wild Azurills near the rivers and ponds of Areas One and Two within the South Province. There is also a small riverbank in East Province (Area One), where Azurill sometimes inhabits. This small ball-tailed rodent is immune to Ghost- and Dragon-type Moves but is highly susceptible to Poison- and Steel-type attacks.

Evolving Azurill into Marill in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet requires Trainers to reach a certain level of Friendship with the Normal- and Fairy-type mouse. While every Trainer likely understands the concept of Friendship with their pocket monsters, most titles in the franchise, including Scarlet and Violet, poorly explain what the mechanic is and how it can be increased. This lack of clear-cut information can be quite an annoyance for newcomers to the series who would like to increase the closeness with their player character and a particular Pokémon.

There are many ways to increase Friendship with Azurill for its evolution into Marill in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. However, it is just as essential for players to know the actions that can decrease their Friendship with this blue mouse and potentially prevent them from evolving this Scarlet and Violet Pokémon.

Game8 states that Trainers should make sure not to let their Azurill faint in battle. While it is unlikely players will use their Azurill in combat in the first place, keeping it out of harm's way is important for maintaining Friendship. Furthermore, players should not feed their Azurill Herbal Medicine, as this item will instantly lower its Friendship.

Conversely, Trainers can increase their Azurill's Friendship by leveling it up with EXP Candy or giving it a Soothe Bell, a special Held Item that boosts Friendship gain by 50%. Vitamins are also a good source of fast Friendship but can be quite costly for those lacking Pokédollars.

Once Azurill's Friendship has reached a sufficient level, the next time it levels up will trigger its evolution into Marill in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. This leveling procedure can be conveniently carried out with a Rare Candy or several EXP Candies.
