Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have given the Quagsire line some much-needed love by introducing Wooper's new evolution: Clodsire. Originally a Water/Ground-type evolution line, Paldean Wooper and Clodsire are Poison/Ground-type Pokémon who started living on land after losing their territory in the region's oceans, according to the Pokédex. For the most part, Clodsire has stayed relatively similar to Quagsire, but their subtle differences beg the question of which is a better Wooper evolution.

Living up to the Quagsire evolution line’s reputation is no easy task. Despite not being particularly strong Pokémon species, both Wooper and Quagsire have been able to become fan favorites in the Pokémon community due to their vacuous smiles and blank eyes. Clodsire - and Paldean Wooper - have managed to garner a similar level of love, though. After the two were announced for Gen 9, they took the internet by storm in a way only matched by Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Lechonk.

Clodsire Is A Better Pokémon Evolution Than Quagsire

Although Quagsire and Clodsire are both lovable, Clodsire has the edge over its predecessor. Beyond its brown and legless design being cuter, Clodsire’s typing and stat distribution makes it more fun and viable to use in battle than Quagsire. Thus, Clodsire is a more rewarding Pokémon to evolve Wooper into than Quagsire.

Clodsire’s Pokémon Stats And Typing Are Stronger

Quagsire and Clodsire both have stat totals of 430, but the latter’s stat distribution makes it a much more useful Pokémon that the former. Quagsire’s stats have a fairly equal distribution, with 95 HP, 85 Attack and Defense, 65 Special Attack and Special Defense, and 35 Speed. In contrast, Clodsire has more specialized stats, investing most of its 430 stat points into its 130 HP, 100 Special Defense, and 75 Attack. This comes at the cost of its Defense, Special Defense, and Speed, but the price is worth it. These stats make Clodsire a stronger Pokémon than it looks, working well as a tank in battles. Its lower Speed even makes it a more reliable Trick Room Pokémon than Quagsire.

Clodsire’s typing also brings the most out of its stats. Being Poison/Ground-type grants Clodsire an invulnerability to Electric attacks and results in reduced damage from Fighting, Poison, Bug, Rock, and Fairy types. This allows Clodsire to make the most out of its strong HP and Special Defense. Technically, Quagisre’s typing does have less weaknesses that Clodsire’s, but it does have a four-times weakness to Grass attacks that Quagsire’s mediocre HP cannot protect it from. On top of all of this, the Water Absorb ability completely removes the Water weakness for Clodsire.

All in all, Clodsire makes for a better evolution for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's Paldean Wooper. Between its stats and typing, Clodsire can be more confidently used as a tank than Quagsire. Even so, both rank among Pokémon’s most endearingly oblivious-looking pocket monsters.
