The Pokémon community is buzzing with excitement after the long-awaited release of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet on Nov. 18, 2022. In addition to new gameplay mechanics and an open world to explore, Generation IX introduces 103 new Pokémon to discover, several of which are Fairy-types.

Fairy-type Pokémon, in all their glittering appeal, were not added to the game until 2013's Pokémon X and Pokémon Y to balance dragon and dark types, who previously had few weaknesses. Generation IX’s newest Fairy-type Pokémon are strong in battle and aesthetic, with some cute and some creepy, growing the family of Fairy-types in a positive direction into the new generation.

Fidough

Fidough was the first of Gen IX’s Fairy-types to be revealed through promotional art for the game. This adorable bread puppy Pokémon became an early spokesperson of Pokémon Violet and Scarlet. The game has many focuses on food, like the picnic and sandwich-making mechanics, where Fidough fits right in.

In its early levels, Fidough learns some basic Fairy-types moves like Baby Doll Eyes and Play Rough, which are befitting of a 30-pound puppy with yeast breath. As players continue leveling Fidough it can learn Charm, which deals 20 damage and harshly lowers opponents' attack stat, giving this baby Pokémon more of an edge in battle. Cute but mighty, Fidough is a new Fairy-type Pokémon that suits multiple play styles and is sure to charm trainers.

Dachbun

Pokémon Dachbun is pictured next to a sleeping Fidough.

At level 26, Fidough evolves into Dachbun, an equally cute but much more powerful Pokémon than its pre-evolution Fidough that continues with the bread dog motif. Appearing as a mix between a Dachshund and toasted bread, it’s a brand new Fairy-type that fans won’t be disappointed in, with some unique abilities to boot.

Dachbun won’t ever have to worry about facing off against fire Pokémon thanks to its ability Well-Baked Body which makes it immune to fire-type moves while greatly boosting its defense stats. The experience of heated battles needed to evolve Dachbun is well worth the effort, as it’s a tanky Pokémon with great defense while maintaining decent speed. Where this loaf lacks in special attack, it makes up in its cute appeal, easily becoming one of the best dog-like Pokémon of Gen IX.

Tinkatink

Standing just over 12 inches tall, Tinkatink is a small Fairy-type Pokémon that yields a homemade hammer. According to its Pokédex entry, it forges the hammer out of iron scraps again and again until it’s satisfied with its form. This tiny pink warrior is the first evolution in an impressive line, though its strength is far from that of the best fully evolved Fairy-type Pokémon.

Tinkatink’s move set is predictable but useful with moves such as Fairy Wind, and Baby-Doll Eyes becoming learnable within the first 8 levels. After grinding to level 21, Tinkatink will learn Draining Kiss and Sweet Kiss which will replenish some HP, giving it a better edge in battle. Excelling in special defense, Tinkatink’s evolutions are well worth giving this new Fairy-type a chance.

Tinkatuff

At level 24, Tinkatink evolves into its second form, Tinkatuff. Its weary expression has hardened, and its hammer has grown larger, making for a small but tough-looking Fairy-type Pokémon that’s a great battle partner for up-and-coming trainers.

Special defense continues to be this Pokémon's strongest suit, making it great to use in Tera Raid battles, one of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's newest and most radiant, gameplay mechanics. Tinktatuff can learn Fairy-type move Play Rough which attacks as well as lowers foes' attack stat, helping this small Pokémon last through a tough battle. Tinkatuff’s unique design will be enjoyed by players while they grind until level 38, which is when this new Fairy-type Pokémon reveals its final magnificent form.

The final evolution of Tinkatink is Tinkaton, a Pokémon that fully encompasses the splendor of Fairy-types. Strong, cute, and incredibly unique, Tinkaton shines as the best new Fairy-type that Gen IX has to offer.

That tiny hammer has been forged into a deadly-looking weapon that looks straight out of Skyrim in Tinkatink’s final evolution, Tinkaton. A far cry from Pokémon’s ugliest Fairy-types, Tinkaton maintains the whimsical look players associate with fairies while packing a punch with its high base attack stat and special defense. According to the Pokédex, this Pokémon is known to use it's hammer to send rocks flying through the air to take down steel-type Pokémon Corviknight and use its armor to improve its own hammer. Cute but deadly, Tinkaton is an incredible Fairy-type introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Scream Tail

At first glance, the new Fairy-type Scream Tail looks like a Jigglypuff having a bad day, but in actuality, it's a Pokémon of its own, an early ancestor of Jigglypuff that the games lore claims is from a billion years ago. Known as a Paradox Pokémon, this ancient ancestor to Jigglypuff is stronger and angrier than its present-day form, making for one of the toughest Fairy-types that is exclusive to Pokémon Scarlet.

Interestingly, Scream Tail only learns one Fairy-type move on its own, Play Rough, but it's a great strategic move for trainers and one that pairs well with Scream Tail's naturally high attack stats. It’s able to learn many more through TM’s which are easier to get ahold of than ever thanks to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s TM crafting system found at every Pokémon Center. Whether Trainers decide to give Scream Tail their own curated lineup of moves or stick with its base move set, they’re sure to enjoy battling with this cute but unnerving Jigglypuff lookalike, one of the coolest Fairy-types Gen IX has to offer.

Flutter Mane

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's new Pokémon Flutter Mane.

Players who enjoy the macabre but dislike conflict may relate to this Fairy-type Pokémon based on their zodiac sign. Featuring an astrological heir, Paradox Pokémon Flutter Mane is an ancient relative of Misdreavus, with a unique dual typing of Ghost and Fairy. Its ethereal appearance may be similar to Misdreavus, but Pokémon Scarlet, which the Pokémon is exclusive to, shares lore that states the two have very little in common other than their appearance.

Of all the new Fairy-types, Flutter Mane has the most impressive Fairy-type moves in its move pool, which it learns naturally from as it levels up. Trainers who use its innate moves like Dazzling Gleam and Moonblast in conjunction with its incredibly high special attack stat are sure to win any battle against any dark, dragon, or fighting-type Pokémon. One of the most powerful Paradox Pokémon of all and one of the most formidable Gen IX Fairy-types, Flutter Mane is a great addition to the small Fairy-type Pokémon family.

Iron Valiant

The Pokedex entry for new Pokémon Iron Valiant.

Iron Valiant appears to be a more regal region design of Gallade or Gardevoir, but it’s an entirely different Pokémon who happens to be a far-off ancestor. A powerful Paradox Pokémon that Pokémon Scarlet and Violet introduced, Iron Valiant could be the next Fairy-type to seek out for Pokémon Violet players, as it’s exclusive to that version of the game.

Included in this powerful Pokémon’s move set are two of the best Fairy-type moves available, Moon Blast which packs 95 attack points, and Spirit Break which was previously a move exclusive to Grimmsnarl. Joining Gardevoir in the family of Fairy-type Pokémon who looks and battle like warriors. With Iron Valiant as just one shining example, Generation IX has contributed some of the strongest Fairy-type Pokémon to the family yet, a promising sign for the underdeveloped type.
