Fans of those tiny Pocket Monsters are in for a treat as Pokémon Quest is getting a surprise smartphone release on June 27. After launching on the Nintendo Switch and becoming one of the console's most-downloaded titles, Quest is becoming ever more portable than before.

The free-to-play game was released on May 30 with the promise of a smartphone version in the near future. It turns out that the future is a lot closer than fans thought, with Pokémon Quest coming to a whole new audience in less than a week. Unlike Niantic's Pokémon GO, Quest is the first spinoff from long-term Pokémon developers Game Freak.

Announced on Poké, pre-registration for Pokémon Quest is currently underway for another trip to the Kanto region. Although Pokémon Quest isn't as big as the Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! titles or the highly-anticipated "main" Pokémon game that is rumored for the Switch in 2019, it is still a fun way to while away the hours. The site sadly confirms that while the Switch and smartphone versions will both use the same touch mechanics, there won't be the ability to transfer data between the two platforms.

As an upgrade from the Game Boy Pokémon games that players first fell in love with in the '90s, Pokémon Quest lets you pick from Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Pikachu or Eevee as a starter Pokémon. Assembling a team of three and leveling up through a series of daily quests, Quest is a blocky RPG that is just as adorable as the rest of the Pokémon series. While it is still only the first generation of Pokémon that are currently available in Quest, there is every chance that the ongoing smartphone game could introduce other generations like Niantic has done with Pokémon GO.

Considering Pokémon Quest was such a hit on the Switch, fans should keep an eye on the smartphone charts and wait for the game to presumably rocket to the top. Just as Pokémon GO was a popular newcomer to the competitive world of smartphone gaming, Pokémon Quest is another unique way to cash in the ongoing craze of those ball-dwelling monsters. Pokémon Quest may have been a bit of a grind unless gamers are willing to shell out on microtransactions, but it is still a colorful addition to the Pokémon franchise to fill the gap until Game Freak launches its next big title.
