With Detective Pikachu breaking box offices around the world and filling fans' hearts with joy, it's no wonder people are already thinking where they can get the next fix of Pokémon. It's true that Detective Pikachu is the first live-action movie of the universe beloved by so many. However, it's far from being the first time Ash's adventures have been depicted in movie form.

There actually more than 20 films that came before Ryan Reynolds graced our screens as Pikachu, which is fantastic news for those who are slowly but steadily being sucked into everything the franchise has to offer. If you just came out of the movie theatre for the fifth time and can't wait to dive deeper into the world of Pokémon, then keep on reading. Here are 10 movies to watch after Detective Pikachu, that will both entertain and delight you!

Arceus and the Jewel of Life

This is the final movie of the Sinnoh trilogy, and the title character is perhaps one of the most iconic ones in all of the Pokémon universe. Arceus can pretty much harness the status of a God, and he returns with characters from the past two films in an attempt to make a comeback to the material world.

It's far from being one of the absolute best movies from Pokémon, and the battles lack a bit in quality and action. But the presence of Arceus, the time-traveling adventures, and the character of Damos make it worthy of at least one watch.

Hoopa and the Clash of Ages

When it comes to narrative, Hoopa and the Clash of Ages probably won't win the Academy Award for best screenplay anytime soon. But it's pretty safe to assume that's far from being the number one reason you're into Pokémon in the first place, and for what it lacks in story, the movie makes up for in exciting battles, action-packed scenes, and enough evolutions to soothe your beating heart.

Hoopa has the power of opening portals to other dimensions and takes on an interesting Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde perspective with its calm and rage-fuelled modes. All in all, the visuals are fantastic, and the movie makes for a stellar good time, in spite of its lack of a proper conductive line for the story.

Pokémon 4Ever

Pokémon 4Ever was the absolute first instance in the film universe that fans witnessed time-traveling, and were absolutely shaken and taken aback by the Sam/Professor Oak conundrum. The star of the show is Celebi, the creature that transports him into the future, which leads to them find Ash, Brock, and Misty.

Its early 2000s status doesn't take much away from the wonderful visuals of the movie, which is a pretty big achievement, all things considered. Fans of Professor Oak are in for a treat with this movie and those who might be unfamiliar with the character are in for a delightful surprise.

The Rise Of Darkrai

The Rise of Darkrai is a fantastic movie for those who are always excited to witness some action-packed battles, but also long for a little bit of extra juice in the form of a more complex storyline going on in the sidelines. The title character, although perceived as a first-rate villain due to his nightmare-inducing powers, is actually the one who can save the day.

After Palkia and Dialgia almost completely destroy a town during an epic battle, Darkrai finds itself being seen as the culprit, when, in reality, he's the protector of a garden for almost a hundred years and the only hope to stop the two Legendaries from turning the city into ashes. It's a compelling narrative, with a beautiful story arc.

Pokémon Heroes

The most compelling thing about Pokémon Heroes is how touching it is. Not in a soapy, tear-jerking way, but through a much more meaningful and subtle nod to the power and beauty of friendship. This makes sense, since friendship is, after all, at the center of what Pokémon means to fans.

Heroes was the last installment to hit theatres before Detective Pikachu, and the narrative focuses on the bond between Ash and the two lovable Dragon-Types, Latios and Latias, a relationship that leads the story and makes for a sweet, entertaining, and satisfying finale - at least for the time being.

Pokémon 3: Spell Of The Unown

The third installment was sort of a redemption for many fans who, after the amazing journey that was the first ever Pokémon movie (more on that later), were disappointed by the second attempt at reproducing the earlier success it gathered.  Pokémon 3: Spell of The Unown comes at a time when the universe had started its steady journey into expansion, but not so much that it became hard to keep up with.

It's a whole new take on storytelling, with the Unown monsters making for great and compelling villains. Told through dream sequences, this movie takes us on a wonderful journey of character development and strays away from the typical formula most of the Pokémon films rely on.

Pokémon 2000

It's an interesting plot, and for many, it marked the last truly quality era of Pokémon films. Pokémon 2000 began a growing obsession with the Legendaries, following the tale of a collector who seeks to seize Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres in an attempt to rise Lugia. Of course, Ash and the team are the ones in charge of making things right, and hence the adventure begins.

There's a little something for everyone, and of course, fan favorite battles are still there, alongside with a pretty well thought out and compelling story. It should definitely make the list of must-watch Pokémon movies!

Pokémon The Movie: I Choose You!

Those who just came out of watching Detective Pikachu will absolutely fall in love with the 20th installment of the Pokémon movie franchise. While it's common for universes who have been going on for ages to start losing a lot of quality, Pokémon made a fantastic comeback with I Choose You.

The movie gives us an alternative continuity that shows fans the earlier days of Ash and Pikachu, their growing friendship, and their fantastic adventures together. It's a delightful and somewhat sentimental journey for early fans of Pokémon and a fantastic surprise to those who are just beginning to dip their toes in the universe.

Destiny Deoxys

The official ending of the third generation Pokémon appears in the form of Deoxys, a legendary alien that falls to Earth and ends up injuring a Rayquaza, which leads to a fight so powerful it completely disturbs Tony, a young boy who witnessed the whole thing. While Deoxys is destroyed, it does leave two eggs.

Years later, Ash and the team will join Tory in a fascinating, thrilling, action-packed adventure that gives Pokémon fans everything their hearts desire - and perhaps even more! The presence of Deoxys is game-changing and makes for a pretty cool movie overall, both for die-hard fans, and those who are now discovering the brave new world of Pokémon.

Pokémon: The First Movie

Pokémon: The First Movie gave us everything. Whether you blame it on nostalgia or undying love for the "good old years", it's impossible to deny the first establishment of the movie universe of Pokémon will forever be regarded as the absolute best ever produced. It's emotional, it's compelling, it's even brutal at times, and that's why we love it so much.

The First Movie sheds light on the origins of Mewtwo, and sends shivers down your spine with heartbreaking scenes such as Ash's petrified state and Pikachu's tears. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat and make you cry all at the same time, just as hard as you did when you were 12 years old. Maybe even more!
