In the latest gameplay trailer for Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the Ginkgo Guild was introduced as a traveling band of merchants who the player will encounter on their journey throughout the Hisui region. Along with the Diamond and Pearl Clans, whose leaders and members were also revealed in the trailer, the Ginkgo Guild promises to be yet another interesting group that will have an important role in Akari and Rei’s story. Not much is known about them yet, and it’s possible that their reveal in the trailer raised more questions about the game than answers.

In the absence of the chain store Poké Marts that players have been familiar with since the first generation of Pokémon games, it’s likely that the Ginkgo Guild will be responsible for providing players with an in-game shopping system as they venture far from the Galaxy Expedition Team headquarters in Jubilife Village. Though its members aren’t native to the Hisui region, the Ginkgo Guild gathers and sells what they’ve found throughout the region on their travels. So far, it’s been confirmed that players will be able to purchase a variety of Berries and herbs from them, but it’s unclear what other kinds of merchandise the Ginkgo Guild will have in stock.

However, like some of the other characters who have clear connections to modern counterparts in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, a few familiar-looking faces appear among the Ginkgo Guild’s merchants as well. It’s been confirmed that Commander Kamado is Professor Rowan’s ancestor, and the Pokémon Legends: Arceus website mentions that there are a number of other ancestors to characters from the modern Sinnoh region in the game. Fans have been quick to note that Akari and Rei resemble Lucas and Dawn, and Captain Cylene looks a lot like Team Galactic’s leader, Cyrus. As such, it’s unclear if the Ginkgo Guild is simply a band of merchants, or if they’ll have a much bigger part to play as the story progresses.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Ginkgo Guild Introduces Two More Possible Ancestors

Volo, a merchant from the Ginkgo Guild in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, is likely Cynthia's ancestor.

Of all the merchants in Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Ginkgo Guild, Volo received the most attention in the latest trailer, and with a close look at his character design, it seems very likely that he’s the ancestor of the Pokémon League Champion, Cynthia. Their gray eyes are strikingly similar, including the fact that both of them cover one eye with their long, blonde hair, which is another feature that they share. In addition, the Pokémon Legends: Arceus website describes him as having a tendency to appear wherever the player is, much like Cynthia, who conveniently pops up to chat with players throughout Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. It’s possible that his appearance as a merchant references the fact that Cynthia frequently gives players key items when their paths cross, but it remains to be seen whether or not the ancestor of the future Pokémon League Champion will do more than just sell his wares.

Cynthia’s ancestor isn’t the only one who may be appearing as a merchant in the Ginkgo Guild as the guild’s leader, Ginter, shares several similarities with Volkner, Sinnoh’s eighth gym leader. Ginter is described as being unenthusiastic, and his slouched pose mirrors Volkner’s when players find him waiting dejectedly for their challenge in Sunyshore Gym. Like Volo and Cynthia, Ginter and Volkner have facial features in common, the most notable of which are their tired, blue eyes. However, despite Volkner’s jaded personality, he’s shown to be a strong gym leader who earns the respect of Sunyshore City’s citizens, and it seems that Ginter shares that strength and leadership with his descendent based on his description on the game’s official website, which credits him with holding the guild together. While the significance of the ancestors that appear in Pokémon Legends: Arceus is still unknown, players will have to be sure to keep their eyes peeled for the Ginkgo Guild and its intriguing merchants on their adventure through the Hisui region.
