Unova Stones in Pokémon GO are used to evolve Pokémon from the Unova region. There are many items used for this purpose in Pokémon Go: Unova Stones, King's Rock, Metal Coat, Dragon Scale, Up-Grade, Sinnoh Stone, Glacial Lure Module, Mossy Lure Module, Magnetic Lure Module, and the Rainy Lure Module. Each of the evolution items can be used once, but players will have the opportunity to collect them by completing tasks, claiming Pokémon Go rewards, or defeating Team GO Rocket leaders.

Unova Stones can be found in several ways in Pokémon Go, but they will require players to fulfill several days' worth of research tasks or win Team GO Rocket Leader battles. There is also no guarantee that players will earn an Unova Stone this way, as the rewards are random. However, players will only need 7 Unova Stones total to evolve Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

Unlike in the single-player Pokémon games, players will still need to collect enough candy to evolve a Pokémon using an Unova Stone. Items like the Unova Stone act as a secondary requirement for evolution. So, if players wanted to evolve Lampent into Chandelure, they would need Lampent candy in addition to an Unova Stone. Other Pokémon have different evolution requirements; Eevee can only evolve into Espeon or Umbreon if players walk with it as a buddy for 10 km, and Espeon evolves in the daytime while Umbreon evolves at night, for example.

When players spin Pokéstops in Pokémon Go, they receive research tasks. There are three categories of research tasks: Today, Field, and Special. The Today research tasks are primarily for special events, like the recently held Pokémon Go's 6th Anniversary Event. Special research tasks are ongoing campaigns typically released for holidays, events, and certain levels. The Field research tasks are the ones that players collect when spinning Pokéstops, and by completing these, players can earn an Unova Stone. At the top of the Field research task page, players can see a reward box. For each day players complete a task, they will earn a stamp. Once all the stamps are filled in, players will earn the randomly generated prize; Unova Stones can be one of the drops.

Another method for collecting Unova Stones is to defeat the Team GO Rocket Leaders Cliff, Arlo, Sierra, or Pokémon Go boss Giovanni. Like with completing Field research tasks, there is no guarantee that players will get an Unova Stone every time they defeat one of these Team GO Rocket Leaders, but there is still a possibility of it being part of the loot after winning the battle.
