Pokemon GO recently announced a Spring Equinox event in the past few weeks, yet another community-facing initiative to help bolster the game's player numbers that hopefully goes the same way as the recent AR improvements that proved to be quite the hit with the community. Now, on top of that announcement and the Dialga raid, Niantic has put out a press release on its blog confirming that Pokemon Go Earth Day 2019 is going to be a reality.

Pokemon GO Earth Day was a hit last year with the player base, and the fact that it was a great non-profit initiative certainly didn't hurt either. The first Earth Day saw Niantic partnering with several organizations to get players up and at 'em, and cleaning up the environment around them. The Earth Day initiative resulted in the collection of 6,631 kilograms of trash, spanning 19 countries and 68 events in total. Now, it looks like Niantic is expanding on the overall initiative's scope.

In a press release about the event on its official website, Niantic announced that Pokemon GO Earth Day was going to take place from April 13 to 28 and that it would be looking to repeat some of its successes from last year. It looks like the company is going to be partnering with some familiar faces, including Playmob (a company providing gaming engagement services) and likely some of the non-profit organizations from 2018, to bring another environmentally-conscious event to the community. It also appears that the event is going to draw on another Niantic property, Ingress; the website states that not only will Pokemon GO players be rewarded, but so will those playing Niantic's other AR game.

The rewards for participating in Pokemon GO Earth Day are all based on player participation, so it's up to the community to roll up their sleeves and get going with clean-up initiatives. There are different tiers of global rewards based on the number of players who want to be clean and green, and we've explained them below.

If 2,000 players attend

  • Pokemon GO players will have increased appearances of Ground-type Pokemon
  • Ingress players will have increased chances of getting heatsinks, multihacks, shields, and power cubes

If 5,000 players attend

  • Pokemon GO players will get Shiny Diglett and increased appearances of Ground-type Pokemon
  • Ingress players will get twice as much AP linking

If 7,000 players attend

  • Pokemon GO players will get twice as much Stardust and Candy for Event Spawns, Groudon in raids, Shiny Diglett, and increased appearances of Ground-type Pokemon
  • Ingress players will get twice as much AP linking

It definitely looks like Niantic is in the business of topping its numbers from last year's Pokemon GO Earth Day in terms of engagement with the community. While around 4,000 players participated last year, the three tiers of rewards going up to attendance based on 7,000 players is a telltale sign that the company could be confident in its attempts to re-engage its flagging audience so far. The initiative is definitely a worthy cause that everyone can get behind, and the tie-in with Ingress may well encourage diehard fans of either property to try out the other and to boost numbers in order to make sure that they reap the best rewards from the events.

Pokemon GO Earth Day kicks off in just under a month, and until then, it looks like players are going to have the Equinox event to keep them occupied, as well as the matter of the latest raids available. Since Groudon is going to be making a comeback here as a raid during Earth Day, then the community better start getting as much practice in on Dialga as possible leading up to the main ticket event.
