Niantic is about to start testing changes to the way Pokémon Go handles PokeCoin distribution. Pokémon Go, despite recent changes to daily life which makes going outside and traveling in groups slightly more complicated than it used to be, has continued to be a popular branch of the Pokémon franchise, and the developers have continued to refine, innovate, and add on to their game since its original release.

Recently, Niantic announced that Pokémon Go players will be able to raid remotely via the Remote Raid Pass feature. This will cost players a certain amount of PokeCoins for each pass, with the price increasing after every purchase (up to 100 PokeCoins). Currently, the only way players can obtain PokeCoins in Pokémon Go is by defending Gyms, but Niantic is about to slowly introduce a new system which can see players gaining PokeCoins in new ways.

According to a recent blog post on Pokémon Go Live, the developers behind the game are looking at new ways for players to earn PokeCoins in Pokémon Go without leaving the house. The post states that soon the Pokémon mobile game will be "rewarding you with PokeCoins for activities besides defending Gyms." A list of the activities players will soon be able to engage in and earn currency is embedded below, and includes such activities as:

  • Make an Excellent Throw
  • Evolve a Pokémon
  • Make a Great Throw
  • Use a Berry to help catch a Pokémon
  • Take a snapshot of your buddy
  • Catch a Pokémon
  • Power up a Pokémon
  • Make a Nice Throw
  • Transfer a Pokémon
  • Win a raid

According to Pokémon Go's developers, the adjustment to the game's currency system will hit Australian players first, and will then come to all players across the globe later after the testing phase has been completed. Additionally, the number of PokeCoins players can earn from Gyms per hour is getting reduced from six to two in order to better balance currency distribution, and the maximum amount of PokeCoins players can gain in a single day is getting increased to fifty-five.

With no end in sight to the current viral pandemic forcing players to stay inside, these new measures by Niantic to ensure Pokémon Go players can both continue to earn currency and enjoy and progress in their game while also practicing safe social distancing and remaining in quarantine if necessary couldn't come at a better time. For a game which was so heavily marketed on getting players to go outside and engage in social activities, Niantic has done a fantastic job in keeping Pokémon Go relevant even in such a complicated and confining time, and hopefully these new changes to the way the game handles PokeCoin distribution will be applied worldwide sooner rather than later.
