There is a new Timed Research Task in Pokémon Go to collect Mega Steelix Energy. At the start of January, it was announced that Onix would be the Pokémon to appear in the Research Breakthrough. At the end of collecting seven stamps, trainers will be given items and the chance to capture an Onix. It even has the potential to appear in its Shiny form. Initially, this Research Breakthrough was also supposed to provide players with Steelix Mega Energy. Although, due to unfortunate circumstances, there is now a Timed Research that will give players 200 Steelix Energy.

Using this Mega Energy, trainers will be able to transform their Steelix into a Mega Steelix for eight hours. Its Mega Evolution will vastly increase its attack and defensive power. This is great for players looking to clear out any five-star raid battles in Pokémon GO. Usually, Mega Energy is collected by defeating Mega Evolutions in Raid Battles. Although, trainers don't usually participate in Mega Evolution raids, making it difficult to get a bigger lobby.

There are four different Limited Research Tasks available. This event will end at midnight on February 1st, leaving players the rest of the month to complete it. Fortunately, these challenges won't be too difficult to achieve. All are centered around capturing Pokémon. These are all four challenges.

Mega Steelix Timed Research Tasks & Rewards in Pokémon Go

Pokemon Go Players Not Impressed By Mega Steelix Candy Reward
  • Step 1/4: Catch 7 Pokémon: Rewards: 50 Mega Steelix Energy.
  • Step 2/4: Catch 7 Pokémon: Rewards: 50 Mega Steelix Energy.
  • Step 3/4: Catch 7 Pokémon: Rewards: 50 Mega Steelix Energy.
  • Step 4/4: Catch 7 Pokémon: Rewards: 50 Mega Steelix Energy.

Fortunately, this challenge is straightforward to complete. It makes sense since this is a way to make up for the unfortunate circumstance that prevented their initial Mega Steelix plans from happening. Finding 28 Pokémon shouldn't be too difficult to clear out this research. Outside of research, players can earn more Mega Energy in Pokémon GO by walking with their buddy. It's important to mention that the Pokémon will need to have a Mega Evolution in the game for this to work. For example, setting Gengar as the buddy will help trainers get more Gengar Mega Energy.

Mega Steelix is an incredibly powerful Ground and Steel-type Pokémon. Its weaknesses consist of Ground, Water, Fire, and Fighting-type moves. When battling against one, it's recommended to be in a group of at least five trainers. Any less might make this battle too challenging to complete in time. Although, trainers will need a Remote Raid Pass or Premium Pass to participate. Bringing along other Mega Evolutions like Mega Charizard Y and Mega Blastoise work well against Mega Steelix. It's the most optimal way to collect Mega Energy.
