After months of waiting, Mega Evolutions are making their way into Pokémon GO tomorrow followed by a series of research events that will take place through the end of August and the month of September. More details on how Mega Evolutions will work are still to come, but they will undoubtedly add a new layer to Pokémon GO's combat system.

Mega Evolutions were teased for Pokémon GO during the Pokémon Presents video showcase in June. The teaser was a short clip of the real world followed by the iconic Mega Evolution symbol and a release date of 2020. No specifics or time frames were given, but it was enough to excite the massive Pokémon GO community. Now, over two months have passed with little word on when Mega Evolutions would arrive, until a surprise announcement was posted just a day before Mega Evoltuion make their mobile device debut.

The official Pokémon GO Twitter posted an image of three Megastones with the caption "Trainers, we have huge news coming your way... or should we say MEGA news?" Pokémon GO's developer, Niantic, confirmed that Mega Evolutions would be making their way into Pokémon GO tomorrow, August 27, and would be accompanied by a series of Mega Evolution-themed research tasks and events. However, there are some pretty limiting restrictions placed on these overpowered Pokémon.

Pokémon GO's Mega Evolutions will have the same effect on Pokémon as it has in previous titles changing both the Pokémon's physical form and stats. But there are some severe changes as to how players will obtain and use Mega Evovled Pokémon. Players will receive Mega Energy when completing Mega Raids, and the amount of Mega Energy received depends on how quickly a player completes these raids. Mega Energy is then used to Mega Evolve a Pokémon. Players will only be able to Mega Evolved four different species (Charizard, Balstoise, Venusaur, and Beedrill) on release, and trainers can only have one Mega Evovled Pokémon in their possession at a time. If a player Mega Evovles a second Pokémon, the first will revert back to its normal state. Mega Evolved Pokémon can be used in battle against friends or gyms, but they cannot be used in the battle league or to defend a gym.

More information regarding Mega Evolutions will be released alongside tomorrow's update, but it's safe to say more Pokémon will be able to Mega Evolve in the future. Similar to how Niantic releases other Pokémon GO updates, new forms could be implements over time. As the concept of Mega Evolutions is new to Pokémon GO there will surely be a series of patches balancing the overpowered behemoths. And with a Charmander Community Day comming up in October, players should expect to see shiny Mega Evovled Charizard as every trainer's buddy Pokémon.
