Mega Abomasnow is a fearsome Grass- and Ice-type Pokémon players can encounter during Mega Raids in Pokémon Go between July 31st and August 10th. First introduced to players in Generation IV's Pokémon Diamond and Pearl games, Abomasnow reportedly lives in remote mountain areas and is well-known for whipping up fierce blizzards. However, Abomasnow, in its Mega Evolved form, can now appear in Mega Raids at Gyms all across the world. Players can group up and battle the Pokémon for a chance at valuable rewards, including Mega Energy and the chance to catch one of Pokémon Go's powerful rare Pokémon.
Raids in Pokémon Go occur when a powerful Pokémon takes over a Gym after hatching from a Raid Egg. To participate, players need to have a Raid Pass, which is given out for free once a day from spinning PokeStop discs, although additional passes and the special Remote Raid Passes can also be bought for coins. Raids are usually completed in co-op; the Pokémon that appear during Raids typically have an extremely high Combat Power (CP) and shouldn't be battled alone.
This is particularly true for Mega Raids, which can feature Pokémon with CP in the tens of thousands. After Pokémon Go kept featuring Pokémon no one wanted, the Mega Abomasnow Raid might give players a battle to get their blood pumping. Mega Abomasnow is a dual Grass- and Ice-type, and despite its intimidating size and appearance, this offers players lots of excellent options for countering it in battle.
Best Counters For Mega Abomasnow Raid in Pokémon GO
Both Grass- and Ice-type Pokémon have a host of vulnerabilities, and Abomasnow's dual typing makes it weak to Steel-, Rock-, Bug-, Poison-, Flying-, Fighting-, and Fire-type moves. Abomasnow has a double weakness to Fire-type moves, which will do an impressive 256% damage against it, so players should prioritize building a team of high-CP Fire-type Pokémon:
- Moltres – Fire-/Flying-type that could be caught in Pokémon Go's July raids | Fast Move: Fire Spin for 14 Damage, Charged Move: Overheat for 160 Damage
- Blaziken – Fire-/Fighting-type, evolves from Torchic and Combusken for 125 Candy | Fast Move: Fire Spin for 14 Damage, Charged Move: Overheat for 160 Damage.
- Reshiram – Dragon-/Fire-type | Fast Move: Fire Fang for 12 Damage, Charged Move: Overheat for 160 Damage.
- Chandelure – Ghost-/Fire-type, evolves from Litwick and Lampent for 125 Candy | Fast Move: Incinerate for 29 Damage, Charged Move: Overheat for 160 Damage.
- Darmanitan – Fire-type, evolves from Darumaka for 50 Candy | Fast Move: Fire Fang for 14 Damage, Charged Move: Overheat for 160 Damage.
- Volcarona – Bug-/Fire-type, evolves from Larvesta for 400 Candy | Fast Move: Fire Spin for 14 Damage, Charged Move: Overheat for 160 Damage.
These Pokémon should do extremely well against Abomasnow. As a bonus, Fire-type Pokémon are also excellent choices for many of Pokémon Go's August Five Star Raids if players find themselves fighting other Raid Pokémon this month. While different types are strong against Abomasnow, the creature's double weakness to the Fire-type makes strong Fire-type Pokémon a priority for the player's team. If the player has Mega Evolved Pokémon of this type, these should also be included in the party. At the same time, players shouldn't use Water-, Grass-, Electric-, and Ground-type moves and Pokémon; Abomasnow is resistant to these types, and the player stands a good chance of being knocked out.
