Pokémon GO has announced its community day for January, which will feature Spheal. Pokémon GO had some truly great community days in 2021, and the team at Niantic looks to be trying to keep that spirit going into next year. As a five-year-old game, Pokémon GO seems to still be going strong with new events and reasons for gamers to keep playing.

With the additions of new Pokémon, as well as Community Days and Spotlight Hours to draw attention to Pokémon both new and old, Niantic is clearly doing a lot to maintain interest in Pokémon GO. While not every event in the game makes the most sense to gamers—pleased though they were to see the return of a Squirtle with sunglasses, the announcement of an Ed Sheeran Pokémon GO collaboration was met with confusion—no one can say that Niantic isn’t making an effort. As the world enters a new year, it seems like the company hasn’t yet run out of steam.

A new post from the Pokémon GO site details the next Community Day, which takes place on January 16, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features Spheal, a third-generation Ice and Water-type. As the featured Pokémon, Spheal will have a higher encounter rate during the event. Also, if players evolve a Spheal into a Walrein during the event or up to two hours afterward, that Walrein will be able to learn the Charged Attack Icicle Spear and the Fast Attack Powder Snow. This comes on the heels of the Pokémon GO holiday event which boosts Ice-type Pokemon, so clearly, Niantic is leaning into the winter theming pretty hard.

The January Community Day offers other bonuses too. Those willing to part with $1 USD or the equivalent will be able to unlock a special research story called The Spheal Deal which will be exclusively available during the corresponding Community Day. Catch XP will get a boost during the Community Day, as will incense and lure modules, and those who take pictures during the Community Day will see some kind of surprise. A one-time-purchase Community Day Box will be available for 1,280 PokéCoins and will include 50 Ultra Balls, five Super Incubators, five Lucky Eggs, and an Elite Fast TM. A free bundle of 30 Ultra Balls will be available as well. So, there’s plenty for gamers to love in there.

This Community Day is only the beginning of Niantic’s plans for Pokémon GO in 2022. The company recently announced the dates and worldwide locations for its Pokémon GO Tour: Live event, following right behind the Pokémon GO Tour: Johto event. If these, plus the Community Day, are any indication, 2022 looks bright for Pokémon GO fans.
