Throughout Pokémon's history, there have been some stellar Ground-types, some primary examples being Golem, Onix and Rhyperior. At this current time, there are 69 in total, so it is an area that the franchise could look to expand upon further. They have been able to create some rather intriguing creatures through this type, but some gamers forget that certain Pokémon are in this type.

Sometimes Pokémon are overlooked because of their appearance or smaller size, even if they are actually great when it comes to battle. There are also some newer Pokémon that have yet to reach the level of popularity that they have the potential to. Thus, it is time to shine more of a light on these underappreciated Ground-types.

Sandshrew

Sandshrew from the Pokémon anime series

There is no question that Generation I possesses an array of iconic Pokémon. This is actually what hurts Sandshrew's chance of being a well-respected Pokémon. In actuality, though, it does have some qualities that make it good.

It is not necessarily the strongest of the bunch, but it does a great job defensively, which enhances its attacks. Also, it is Pokémon that does not receive enough credit when it comes to its style, too.

Drilbur

Drilbur from the Pokémon anime series

Drilbur is the perfect name for this Pokémon, as it is a mole with very long claws. This comes in handy when it comes to its attacks, as it can leave serious damage.

Also, the importance of catching this Pokémon cannot be overlooked, as it evolves into Excadrill, so any player should definitely be aggressive when one comes around.

Gligar

Gligar from the Pokémon series

Gligar is a Pokémon that ultimately is a monster upgrade from the Generation I Pokémon, Zubat. But it possesses a far more unique look, as it is not only a bat, but also resembles a scorpion, too.

Another interesting fact about this Pokémon is that it glides through the air instead of flying. It can also be very effective because it uses poison to inflict damage on its opponents.

Rhyhorn

Rhyhorn from the Pokémon anime series

Rhyhorn is another Generation I Pokémon that gamers sometimes criticize because of how much it looks like a rhino. However, it warrants far more praise, as it is one of the strongest pre-evolved Pokémon out there. This is especially the case when playing Pokémon Go.

They are always important to catch because they evolve into Rhydon, which is powerful enough on its own. However, it goes one step further when it becomes Rhyperior, so it is a valuable Pokémon, overall.

Golett

Golett from the Pokémon anime series

Golett is very intriguing from the start, as it is a rare Ground/Ghost-type Pokémon. It's a pretty large creature, which certainly helps its ability to win battles. It is also an interesting character because it resembles a robot but has rocks for its arms.

This is a prime example of how creative Pokémon can get when it comes to their creations. It is not among the most popular Generation V Pokémon, but it still should be appreciated for its raw originality.

Claydol

Claydol is one of the most interesting-looking Pokémon from Generation III, as it has many light red eyes and beak-like noses around its entire head.

As its name implies, it is a clay doll, too, which is a bit strange. Nonetheless, this Pokémon is quite intimidating and it also handles itself well in battle, as it is able to shoot beams from its hands.

Krookodile

Ash's Krookodile from the Pokémon anime series

Ash's Krookodile in the anime series is particularly a cool guy, as it sports a nice pair of shades, but it's also a rather imposing red and black crocodile.

It also is known for being quite effective in battle because of its extremely strong jaw. It is able to injure opponents if it gets a firm grasp on them. Also, its naturally combative and aggressive nature allows it to overpower other Pokémon around it.

Diglett

Diglett is not going to do too well when in battle against the big Pokémon. However, it is still fairly crafty, as it is able to avoid danger by hiding underground. It succeeds in doing so because of its elite digging ability.

Furthermore, this Pokémon is also pretty cute, as it's a mole with just two small eyes and a giant pink nose. Alolan Diglett also enhances its appearances, too, as it sports three thin pieces of blonde hair. Overall, it is just a humorous Pokémon.

Camerupt

Camerupt from the Pokémon anime series

Camerupt is a cool Pokémon, but does not seem to get the love that it deserves. For starters, it is understandably a Ground-type because it is inspired by a camel, but there's more to it than that. It also has two volcanoes on it, so it is a Fire-type, as well.

Its agitated face also is a nice touch, as it shows that this Pokémon does have a bit of temper. This meshes well with the Fire-type aspect of its biology. Its volcanoes are what allows this Pokémon to inflict serious damage against its opponents.

Palpitoad

Palpitoad possesses another intriguing combination, as it is a Water/Ground type. This is not necessarily the most common of mixes, so this should be noted.

Yet, this Pokémon is easily one of the cutest from Generation V. Its original form, Tympole, definitely holds this distinction, too. However, what makes Palpitoad a bit better is that it can handle itself in battle, as it is far sturdier.
