The Normal-type in Pokémon is known as one of the weaker types. Many Pokémon with this typing are found in the early portions of the games and are often discarded for stronger Pokémon as the player progresses through the story. However, certain Normal-types are quite strong, and a second type can enhance their viability even more in some situations.

One metric for measuring a Pokémon's value is through base stats, abilities, and available moves. Although Normal-type Pokémon are not usually impressive in general, there are several notable exceptions, and players should strongly consider them when planning a playthrough of games that feature these Pokémon.

Meloetta

The Mythical Pokémon Meloetta as seen in the Pokémon anime

The Normal/Psychic Meloetta has the unique ability to transform from the default Aria Forme into the Pirouette Forme during battle, changing its typing to Normal/Fighting. The Aria Forme features high Special Attack and Special Defense stats, while the Pirouette Forme features high Attack and Speed stats. Although the Pirouette Forme boosts Defense slightly, it turns Meloetta into more of a glass cannon. If used correctly, though, this allows Meloetta to be a great Physical and Special attacker, depending on the situation. Meloetta also has strong move options for both types of attacks, so it is quite powerful.

Mega Audino

With a mega evolution adding a second typing, the Normal/Fairy Mega Audino gains a significant stat boost in both its Defense and Special Defense. The only other boost is a slight one to its Special Attack. Mega Audino functions best as a tank and a healer, and it is perhaps best suited for double battles when it can assist an ally. It represents not only what is considered one of the best designed mega evolutions, but it is also incredibly viable in certain formats.

Obstagoon

The final evolution to the Galarian versions of Zigzagoon and Linoone, the Dark/Normal-type Obstagoon has a fairly even value spread across each of its stats, except for Special Attack, which is relatively low. This does not impact Obstagoon, however, since the majority of moves it learns from leveling up are Physical moves, which benefit from Obstagoon's higher Attack stat. Coupled with the fact that it has access to a variety of powerful Physical attacks, Obstagoon is an impressive dual-type Normal Pokémon, especially for one that is neither legendary nor mega evolved.

Braviary

The Normal/Flying-type Braviary is one of the stronger non-legendary bird Pokémon in the series. While its Special Attack and Speed stats are unimpressive, Braviary can withstand attacks thanks to its high HP stat and decent Defense and Special Defense stats.

Aside from HP, Braviary shines as a powerful attacker. It can learn many Physical Flying and Normal moves, and it can utilize its high Attack stat to knock out opponents, even if it has to move after them.

Oranguru

The unique typing of Normal/Psychic contributes to making Oranguru a strong choice. This typing allows the Pokémon to take neutral damage from Fighting moves, the only type super-effective against Normal. It also makes Oranguru immune to Ghost-type moves, one of Psychic's biggest weaknesses. While most of its stats are relatively lackluster, its fairly high HP and Special Defense stats show its role as a Pokémon that can take a lot of damage and whittle away at opponents' health over the course of the battle.

Pyroar

The Fire/Normal-type Pyroar has fairly high Special Attack and Speed stats, but this is at the sacrifice of its Attack, Defense, and Special Defense. Pyroar shines, however, using the two high stats it has. The high Speed stat allows it to strike before many opponents, and its attacks are powerful enough to eliminate a large number of enemies before they can retaliate. Pyroar also has access to some great Special moves, such as Flamethrower and Overheat, which are some of the most powerful Fire moves in the Pokémon games.

Mega Lopunny

Upon mega evolving, this Normal/Fighting-type gains an extremely large boost to its Attack stat, as well as a sizable boost to its Speed stat. The rest of its stats remain relatively the same, but this heightened Attack stat makes Mega Lopunny a seemingly unstoppable force.

It has access to some of the best Fighting-type moves in the series, and its Scrappy ability means that Mega Lopunny can use Normal and Fighting moves to hit Ghost Pokémon. The addition of the Fighting type through its mega evolution gives Mega Lopunny more moves with a Same Type Attack Bonus, making them even stronger.

Bewear

Since its introduction, Bewear has gained a reputation as a deceptively frightening Pokémon, and for good reason. This Normal/Fighting-type has high HP and Attack stats, making it both difficult to knock out and incredibly strong. Its other stats are fairly mediocre, but Bewear relies on the high stats it has to deal with opponents, learning mainly Physical moves. Even though its Speed stat is relatively low, opposing Pokémon can rarely take it out in one hit, and Bewear can strike back with extreme force.

Staraptor

Regarded as one of the coolest regional birds in Pokémon, the Normal/Flying-type Staraptor serves a similar function as Mega Lopunny, which is attacking quickly and with great strength. Staraptor's Special Attack is lacking, but most of its available moves are Physical, so that does not negatively affect it. While its Defense and Special Defense stats leave something to be desired, the speed and intensity with which Staraptor can attack allow it to hold its own with some incredibly strong Pokémon.

Mega Pidgeot

The original regional bird benefits greatly from its mega evolution, especially in regards to its Special Attack stat. With a slight boost to its Speed stat as well, the Normal/Flying Mega Pidgeot can outspeed many opponents to land a devastating attack. This is helped further by its No Guard ability, which causes all moves used by or against Mega Pidgeot to be perfectly accurate. While this means that opponents can hit it with perfect accuracy, the speed and power with which Mega Pidgeot can attack make it one of the strongest dual-type Normal Pokémon in the series.
