Sony is currently in the process of developing at least three films and seven TV shows based on PlayStation video games. Like the upcoming Uncharted film, movies based on PlayStation games have the potential to deliver high-quality stories, given Sony's tendency to focus on narrative-driven, single-player exclusives. The company has a wide library of PlayStation-exclusive game series, however, so it's not clear which three games will be adapted for the big screen.

These upcoming PlayStation game movies and TV shows are part of a program called One Sony, through which the entertainment giant is looking to create more content across mediums. While it's unknown if the Tom Holland-led Uncharted movie is part of these three aforementioned films, it is the first example of how Sony could leverage its existing video games for new movie properties.

Video game-based films have, generally speaking, been pretty rough. For every great Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu movie, there are a dozen mediocre Resident Evil films. Sony could turn this record around, however, as the following three PlayStation game franchises are part of a program called One Sony, through which the entertainment giant is looking to create more content across mediums. While it's unknown if the Tom Holland-led Uncharted movie is part of these three aforementioned films, it is the first example of how Sony could leverage its existing video games for new movie properties. PlayStation Games That Would Make Great Movies: Bloodborne

Bloodborne Moon Presence 2

Everything about FromSoftware’s Bloodborne would adapt to a film beautifully: giant cathedrals, disgustingly gooey monsters, and a cast of characters who have been afflicted with a terrible curse. The film could begin just like the game, with the main character, an unnamed Hunter, waking up alone in a hospital in the middle of the cursed night. Terrifying monsters like the Blood-Starved Beast, Vicar Amelia, and Rom, the Vacuous Spider would stand in the Hunter’s path, only to be cut down in increasingly brutal ways.

But a Bloodborne film like this would be just as vague and confusing as the game, with much of its storytelling done through minor characters and the environment. In the game, players explore the city of Yharnam after it has already been partially destroyed, but the film could instead show viewers the process of the city's crumbling as a result of its reliance on the Healing Church. The film's characters could slowly descend into madness at the hands of Bloodborne's healing Old Blood, becoming hallucinating, unreliable narrators like Bloodborne's Hunter protagonist. All Sony would need to do it attach Guillermo del Toro to the project and watch as the game's world comes to bloody life.

PlayStation Games That Would Make Great Movies: God of War

God Of War Kratos Atreus

Santa Monica Studio’s 2018 God of War took the series in a radical new direction: fatherhood. Like the game, the movie could follow Kratos and Atreus as they try to climb the land's tallest mountain to spread the ashes of Kratos' wife, Faye. By bringing God of War to the silver screen, the deeper bonds of fatherhood could be explored. For as good as the 2018 game is, a movie could even better convey the tension between Kratos and his son. The film could also cover more of what happened between the games, how Kratos met his wife, and how Kratos wants to be a better father to Atreus but still struggles with his past.

PlayStation Games That Would Make Great Movies: The Last of Us

Last of Us Abby

There may be a The Last of Us show already in the works over at HBO, but that doesn’t mean there couldn’t be a standalone story focusing on Joel at the start of the outbreak or on Ellie before she's bitten. Similar to A Quiet Place, the audio direction of the film could play a key role in showing the emptiness of the world once people are gone. Last of Us characters walking through the remnants of major cities and small towns while a haunting silence hangs in the air could be terrifying on its own - that is, until Joel and Ellie hear the distant sound of a moan or the signature clicking of the horrifying Clicker zombies.

Given Sony’s record for amazing exclusive video games, there is plenty of video game content for it to bring to a film. Between three movies and seven TV shows, Sony has a good opportunity to create a wide variety of content that any fan can enjoy. With the upcoming Uncharted film set to release in July 2021, it might be the start of a diverse PlayStation film universe.
