Sony has revealed the free PlayStation Plus games for April 2019, and they're two titles that fans will be pleased to add to their library for free, provided they're PS Plus subscribers. April's batch of free games might be smaller than they have been in the past, but they're two popular games in Conan Exiles and The Surge.

Subscribers only have a few more days to grab PlayStation Plus March 2019 batch of games, which were very strong in their own right. March included Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, a return to one of the game's that launched the series into its massive popularity today. That was accompanied by The Witness, a game created by indie favorite Jonathan Blow. The Witness featured engaging, challenging puzzles that many players often needed to solve using extraneous tools like notebooks and pens, and it was a very rewarding experience that took many by surprise when it released in 2016. Those games will be available until the end of the month, so interested subscribers should make it a priority to snag them while they're still there.

The PlayStation Blog unveiled the free PlayStation Plus games for April 2019 earlier today, and it will continue the trend started earlier in introducing two games a month. This month, players will gain access to Conan Exiles, a game based on the popular Conan property that tasks its users with surviving a shared online space with other players. Conan Exiles allows players to fight together, build bases, and participate in other survival-based activities. In our review, we noted that Conan Exiles had a lot of potential that was marred by some technical issues, but taking a spin with the game for free might help alleviate the negativity surrounding those qualities and free-up the game as an enjoyable if flawed title.

The Surge is the second title players will gain access to. The Surge received mostly positive reviews and did some unique things for the sci-fi RPG genre, including some difficult gameplay in the deliberately confusing setting of the CREO research facility. Players needed to fend off machines, scrounge up new parts and weapons, and rescue survivors over the course of the game's campaign. Overall, The Surge is exactly the kind of free PlayStation Plus game we've come to expect from Sony, an attractive title that might be new to many players and deserves a bit of the spotlight.

Still, even with two decent choices for the free PlayStation Plus games for April 2019, it feels as though Sony's premium subscriber offering is falling well short of what Xbox is offering. Xbox continues to offer double the amount of games that Sony does, and Xbox's Games With Gold April 2019 announcement featured The Technomancer, Star Wars Battlefront II, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2. Those offerings feel like a noticeable step up from Sony's, and now that PlayStation Plus won't support Vita titles, the PS4 offerings will likely need to become better soon for PlayStation Plus to keep up with Games With Gold.
