Video game industry titan PlayStation plans to release 'experimental' games in the future. The groundbreaking PlayStation 5 continues to smash performance records. Most recently, the current-gen console became the fastest-selling video game console per units sold in US history. That record includes total dollars spent as well.  It's not unreasonable to say the PlayStation 5 is doing extremely well commercially.

The PlayStation 5 has maintained a firm grasp on its popularity since it launched alongside the Xbox Series X/S last November. However, there have been challenges along the way with console availability and price scalpers. Sony has strived to correct issues whenever they first appear. The console recently welcomed a large system update earlier this month to improve system performance and playability. While the update provided a variety of changes, arguably the most popular is giving players the option to store games on an external hard drive. While Sony has developed a reputation for sponsoring and releasing blockbuster single-player games exclusive to the platform, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst has hinted that titles that differ from the usual format may arrive sooner than later.

News outlet Video Games Chronicle reports that Sony is heavily considering investing in games that depart from the company's standard titles. “I am very interested in creating a diverse slate of titles. Actually, the shape or form that they come in are less interesting to me than the fact that they are differentiated, diverse and distinctive,” Hulst said in an interview. In a move that surprised many, PlayStation reached an agreement this week with a multiplayer project called Firewalk, a new studio created by former Bungie developers. Perhaps this development is a preview of collaborations players can expect to see in the future.

PlayStation 5 Sales 6 Million March 2021

Unfortunately, the PlayStation 5 remains a distant prospect for many. It has been available in short supply for the last six months and is still far too scarce. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan recently announced the company's commitment to reduce the current console shortage. It remains a major priority as a substantial number of interested consumers have either been priced out or unable to secure one for themselves.

Innovation is needed in any industry, especially one as lucrative and popular as video games. While there may be slight opposition from purists who wish to see Sony's tradition of releasing exclusive narrative-driven titles carry on, evolution is always just around the corner. As technology continues to expand the possibilities for video games, it sounds like PlayStation wishes to be at the forefront of this exciting new direction.
