An all-new sequel could be in the works for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale on the PS5, according to recent rumors. Originally developed by SuperBot Entertainment in collaboration with Sony's Santa Monica Studios, the first PlayStation All-Stars was released in 2012 and featured popular characters from a variety of PlayStation exclusive titles, including Kratos from the God of War series and Sack Boy from Little Big Planet.

Although titled PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, the game itself was not a member of the "battle royale" genre as it is known today, instead featuring gameplay and fighting concepts pulled directly from Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series. The game released to mostly middling reviews due to generic, floaty mechanics and an underwhelming amount of content, but nevertheless went on to win the IGN People's Choice Award in December, 2012.

According to a post on Reddit detailing a supposed leak from a Capcom USA developer, the sequel will be called PlayStation All-Stars Arena and release as a launch title for the PlayStation 5. The stated information goes on to detail gameplay which "plays like Dissidia mixed with Power Stone" and describes a game that is fully 3D in order to distance itself from the Super Smash Bros. series from which it originally drew inspiration, with an art style composed of cartoon backgrounds and cel-shaded characters.

Characters that will supposedly be appearing in the upcoming sequel include Jill Valentine from the Resident Evil series, Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid, the recently purchased Spider-Man, and Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn. With the Spyro Reignited Trilogy remake and recent Crash Team Racing game having brought their respective franchise mascots back into public view, their appearance on the rumored list of confirmed fighters is no surprise. The full roster is said to include:

  • Nathan Drake
  • Kratos
  • Sack Boy
  • Ratchet and Clank
  • Jak and Daxter
  • Spider-Man
  • Aloy
  • Helghast Soldier
  • Crash Bandicoot
  • Spyro the Dragon
  • Tomb Raider
  • Jill Valentine
  • Sir Daniel Fortesque
  • Kat
  • Dante
  • Parappa The Rapper
  • Ellie
  • Delsin Rowe
  • Cloud
  • Solid Snake
  • Ryu
  • Chun Li

While it would be pretty interesting to see how all of these different iconic characters would battle against each other in a properly-made fighting game, it's worth noting both Solid Snake and Cloud (from the upcoming Final Fantasy VII remaster) are already featured fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, making their dual appearances here rather dubious. The fact that Sony has regained complete control of the Spider-Man property makes his inclusion somewhat plausible, but it would be unusual for them to place such an expensive character in a low-profile title like a sequel to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale unless they were planning for it to be much, much better than the original. While there are lots of rumors floating around about the release date and price of the PS5, players will just have to wait and see if this proposed launch title will come to pass.
