In an attempt to build anticipation for the PlayStation 5, Sony has taken to Twitter to celebrate the PlayStation 1's 25th anniversary. The release date and price for both the hybrid and digital-only versions of the PS5 have yet to be announced, and fans are expecting something big today due to the date's significance to Sony - and the price and launch date reveal of the Xbox Series X.

September 9, 1995, marked the North American release for Sony's first console, the PlayStation 1, which started a 25-year-long train of fantastic gaming memories. Since then, Sony has released a number of consoles both stationary and portable. PlayStation has been the home of many loveable characters including Ratchet & Clank, Crash Bandicoot, Kratos from God of War, and many others. Gamers have grown with these characters over the years, and Sony is now extorting these nostalgic memories to build hype for an inevitable PS5 announcement.

The official Sony Twitter account posted in celebration of PlayStation's 25th anniversary. The tweet consisted of a couple of images of the PlayStation 1 and PS1 hardware and asked gamers what the first PlayStation 1 game that came to mind was. The tweet garnered several thousands of responses and retweets many of which were from gamers sharing their favorite PlayStation memories. Others reacted to the tweet negatively asking for Sony to stop "messing around" and announce the PS5's release date and price.

Competitors Microsoft and Nintendo have dominated social media recently with a flurry of announcements. The Xbox Series X and Series S release date was announced alongside the price for both consoles. Nintendo made various announcements related to Mario's 35th anniversary and then announced a new Hyrule Warriors game. Sony is seemingly being left in the dust, and this single tweet is all the hope PlayStation fans have of an upcoming announcement. However, the tweet came from the official Sony account and not from PlayStation which makes it hard to say if PlayStation will make any big announcements today.

Regardless of whether there will be any announcements, it has been a lot of fun to scroll through users' replies to Sony's celebratory tweet. Seeing the old PlayStation 1 game artwork and reading peoples' stories about playing with their friends or cousins is quite nostalgic. While there may not be any big PS5 news, Sony has succeeded in making plenty of gamers want to dust off their old PlayStation 1's and pop in their copies of Twister Metal. Sure, it would be nice to know the price of the next-gen PlayStation, but it's also been enjoyable to relive some of the greatest gaming moments from 25 years ago.
