A new Among Us mod allows players to experience the childhood classic game, "The Floor is Lava," by granting the Impostor the ability to turn floors into fiery pits of molten rock, or at least granting them immunity to its deadly effects. Popular YouTubers and streamers have put their coding abilities to the test and have created or commissioned modded versions of Among Us that change the game's classic format in creative ways. Many of the most popular mods add roles that empower crewmates to fight against the Impostor, or improve the Impostor's killing and sabotaging ability to make them even more difficult to defeat. Two popular creators, SSundee and Socksfor1 each added a mod to one of their games that causes rooms on the map to fill with lava. Each creator put a slightly different spin on this mod, however, illustrating how many different ways mods can change the game.

In Socksfor1's version of the mod, lava fills a random room every 30 seconds, and crewmates who touch it will be killed. In this version, the Impostor has no control over the lava, but they have immunity to its effects. By contrast, in SSundee's version of the mod, the Impostor gets a lava button that allows them to trigger the lava effect across the map. Crewmates can avoid the lava by standing up on props like boxes, chairs, and tables placed around the map at the start of a match, and Impostors are immune to the effects. Both versions can create a stressful and chaotic game that makes it difficult for crewmates to complete tasks. Here's how to play The Floor is Lava in Among Us.

How to Play The Floor is Lava Mod in Among Us

A single room fills with lava every thirty seconds in one version of the Floor is Lava mod for Among Us

At the time of writing, the only people who have access to the Floor is Lava mods are SSundee, Socksfor1, and their friends. There has not yet been a public file released for other players to download to their game. However, because it is still very new, there is always a chance talented modders will create their own version of the idea that can be shared with other fans later.

In Socksfor1's version of the Floor is Lava mod, players experience the game mostly normally. A countdown at the bottom left of the screen lets all players know when a random room will fill with lava. If Impostors are quick about it, they can use their sabotage abilities to lock crewmates in a room that then fills with lava and eliminates them all. This version is a bit more balanced, still allowing crewmates to complete tasks while lava is concentrated to a single room.

Players can see this version in action by watching Socksfor1's video below:

SSundee's version of the mod is far more chaotic, though it does incorporate more elements of the childhood game. In this version, the Impostors control the Lava, and it fills the entire map. With two Impostors both having control of the lava, it can be nearly impossible for crewmates to complete tasks.

At the start of the game using SSundee's version, three players are randomly assigned to place props around the map. It's a good idea for them to place these props in nearly every room or hallway at various intervals, without making any room too crowded or completely empty. When the floor turns to lava, crewmates must quickly make their way to a prop and stay on it until the lava fades. Impostors do not need to stand on a prop, but it can easily give them away if they are spotted walking around normally while the floor turns to molten rock.

During the game, the Impostors can use the lava button to trap crewmates on a prop, then use the Kill button to eliminate them while they cannot move. They can also sabotage the reactor, then also trigger the lava effect. Because both of these effects make the same alarm sound, it can be a good way to confuse crewmates and cause them to make a fatal mistake.

In this version, the lava button is both a new way to kill and its own sabotage. This combination makes it extremely difficult for crewmates to win. In SSundee's video, while the crew came close at least once, the Impostors officially won every time.

If one of these mods ever becomes available for public use, it should likely be the one Socksfor1 uses. That way it can be an added feature without making the Impostor too overpowered and keep the game somewhat balanced.
