Fans of Among Us have been enjoying mods that introduce new roles for crewmates, which often allow them to thwart the Impostors and balance the odds somewhat. Popular options have included the Sheriff role mod, which allows one crewmate to have the ability to kill like an Impostor, and the Doctor role, which has allowed one crewmate to resurrect any dead crewmates before the body has been reported. While these role mods have given crewmates direct abilities, the Detective role mod, created by popular streamer and YouTuber Socksfor1, offers a more passive way for crewmates to gain the advantage over Impostors.

When a crewmate is assigned the role of Detective, they have the ability to see every player's footprints, each with the same color as the player's sprite's skin. If the Detective finds a body, they can see footprints from the most recent players to walk anywhere near the body's location. However, footprints will fade with time, so if the Detective does not arrive quickly enough, they are more likely to get their accusation wrong. Naturally, the ability to see which players have gone near the scene of a murder will paint a large target on the Detective, so it is best for players in this role to keep their position a secret as long as they can. Here's how to play the Detective Role mod in Among Us.

How to Investigate as the Detective in Among Us

At the time of writing, only Socksfor1 and his friends have access to the Detective Role mod for Among Us. Though it is not widely available for download, players may have luck getting into a game that uses this mod by joining a server that has it installed. It is also possible that, given its popularity, a version becomes more widely available in the future.

When a player is assigned the role of Detective in Among Us, they will be able to see every player's movements as a trail of colorful dots matching the color of that player's sprite. These footprints are bolder and brighter the more recently the player has been through the area, but they will start to fade over the course of a few seconds until they disappear entirely. The Detective can keep an eye on vents to see who has gone inside one. They can also look around a dead body before it is reported to see which players have been near the spot where the crewmate was killed.

The rest of the game proceeds as normal, but every player can be tracked by the Detective. The Detective will need to complete tasks just like the other crewmates as they work on their investigation. Sabotages, like cutting lights or shutting doors, will make it more difficult for Detectives to use their ability effectively. Crewmates can be cleared of suspicion if the Detective follows them and doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary about their trail.

YouTuber Socksfor1 plays Detective and can see every other player's footprints in Among Us.

Unfortunately, as soon as the Detective reveals the identity of the Impostor in a meeting, they will give their role away. This makes them a target for the Impostors, as it will be in an Impostor's best interests to get rid of the Detective early. The Detective will need to remain quiet about their abilities until they are absolutely certain about making an accusation.

Additionally, to avoid suspicion, some Impostors may try to lie and claim they are the Detective, especially if the actual Detective has accused them. This can cause the actual Detective to appear suspicious and get ejected if enough people believe the Impostor's story.
