The Google Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro are here with quite a few improvements over the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro released last year. Last year, the Magic Eraser feature headlined the Pixel flagships. However, this year the highlight of the new smartphones is the new camera features. Clearly, Google is appealing to smartphone photography enthusiasts with all the new camera-centric features it provides on the Pixel 7 series.
The Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro have features like Guided Frame and Cinematic Blur, but there's more. In terms of design, the Pixel 7 is almost identical to the Pixel 6, with new colors being the distinctive factor between the two, including Snow, Obsidian, and Lemongrass. The Pixel 7 Pro comes in Hazel, Chalk, and Obsidian as color options. In addition, the smartphones are equipped with Google's latest silicon and will run on Android 13 out of the box.
Google's Tensor G2 Unlocks Some New Tricks On The Pixel 7 Series
The Pixel 7 is the smaller of the two smartphones launched at the Made by Google event. It comes with a 6.3-inch FHD+ OLED display. While the peak brightness has gone up from 800 nits on the Pixel 6 to 1400 nits on the Pixel 7, the refresh rate remains 90Hz. On the other hand, the Pixel 7 Pro, with its massive 6.7-inch QHD+ OLED display and a peak brightness of up to 1500 nits, is the device for those who consume a lot of content. Also, Pixel 7 Pro's LTPO display supports a variable refresh rate between 10-120 Hz. The way Google has limited the non-Pro Pixel's display and peak brightness is similar to the iPhone 14 series released last month.
This year's real deal seems to be the second generation of Google's in-house chipset, the Tensor G2. The chipset is not only more powerful than last year's Google Tensor, and it is more power-efficient as well. Combined with 8GB of RAM on the vanilla Pixel 7 and 12GB of RAM on the Pixel 7 Pro, the Tensor G2 unlocks some fantastic features, especially in the camera department. In addition, the processor is accompanied by Google's Titan M2 security chip, making the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro secure. Later this year, Google will also provide a new VPN service for the latest devices at no extra cost.
Now, let's address the elephant in the room — Pixel 7's cameras. The Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro use the same 50MP primary sensor as their predecessor. However, the upgraded image signal processor in the Tensor G2 can do some impressive tricks. For instance, the new Photo Unblur feature, exclusively available on the Pixel 7 series, deploys machine learning to sharpen blurred images. Then there's the innovative Guided Frame that provides audio instruction to the blind and helps them click a post-worthy selfie. In response to the Cinematic Mode on the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 14, Google has added a new Cinematic Blur video mode that applies portrait mode to videos, live. While these features are available on both smartphones, it gets even better with the Pixel 7 Pro.
Pixel 7 Pro Offers Super Zoom And Macro Focus
The Pixel 7 Pro comes with an improved telephoto and ultrawide sensor that enables up to 5x optical zoom and the first for a Pixel, a Macro Focus mode. Further, using pixel binning technology, the Pixel 7 offers up to 7x zoom while the Pixel 7 Pro takes it even further to 30x Super Res Zoom. Last but not least, both flagships feature 10.8MP ultrawide selfie sensors that allow shooting videos in 4K at up to 60 frames per second. Speaking of video recording, Google has added the ability to record 10-bit HDR videos on the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro this year.
Battery life remains similar to the Pixel 6 series as Google promises an effective usage time of up to 24 hours on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. However, with the new Extreme Battery Saver mode, users can get up to 72 hours of battery backup. In terms of charging, up to 21 watts on Pixel 7 and up to 23 watts on Pixel 7 Pro, and Qi wireless charging. Regarding connectivity, Google provides support for both mmWave and sub-6 GHz 5G networks, along with wireless connectivity options like Bluetooth v5.2, Wi-Fi 6E and NFC. In addition to the regular under-display fingerprint scanner, the Pixel 7 series also offers Face Unlock. Pre-orders begin today, and the Pixel 7 is available from $599, and the Pixel 7 Pro from $899.
