The latest Pixar adventure, Luca, is now out on Disney+ for fans of all ages to enjoy. The movie tells a charming story of friendship between two sea monsters who disguise themselves as humans to explore the beautiful community above the sea on the Italian Riviera.

As can be expected with most Pixar movies now, the imaginative story and setting are made even more special thanks to the colorful characters who populate the story. Some of these characters only appear briefly, others are quite unlikeable, and some are inspiring characters who could find a place among the most beloved that Pixar has created.

Uncle Ugo

When Luca's parents discover that he has been sneaking off to the human world, they decide he will have to spend the season with his Uncle Ugo. A terrifying-looking creature, Ugo comes from the deep and, as such, seems like a bit of an eccentric character.

Ugo is funny and compelling in his brief appearance, but it is far too short. The filmmakers seemed to recognize that fans would want to see more of him since he is given a post-credit scene, but for a character who could have been a memorable side character, it feels like a wasted opportunity.

Machiavelli

Machiavelli the cat looking over table in Luca

Disney movies have had a long history of memorable animal sidekicks, and Machiavelli, the cat, carries on that tradition admirably. When Alberto and Luca have dinner with Giulia and her father, they try to hide their monster secret. While the humans remain oblivious, Machiavelli sees it and keeps a close and untrusting eye on them.

Like Ugo, the movie could have used Machiavelli even more in the movie. However, it may have also been smart to keep the cat from overstaying its welcome with audiences.

Ercole

Even a movie as charming as this still needs a villain of some sort. Ercole is certainly not one of the scarier or more intimidating villains in Pixar's history, but he does a great job of giving the audience someone to root against.

His selfish and arrogant behavior is instantly obnoxious but without becoming too annoying. He is a fun antagonist in the story without the movie spending too much time making him a real threat. It helps make him an entertaining if a somewhat forgettable villain.

Lorenzo

Lorenzo looks panicked in Luca

Lorenzo is Luca's father and definitely the less involved parent in the story. Though he is clearly a loving father who cares about his family, he takes a backseat to everyone else in the movie.

He is a distracted and somewhat absent-minded character with some funny moments as he blunders about. However, he basically follows Luca's mother around throughout the entire movie and doesn't really have much agency of his own in the story.

Grandma

Luca's Grandma is also not a big part of the story, but her impact on Luca is significant. While Luca's mother is strict about visiting the surface world and staying out of danger, his grandma has a much more relaxed approach to it all.

She casually talks about her time having fun above the ocean and encourages Luca to be more adventurous. She even covers for him when it's obvious he has been out exploring against his mother's wishes. Were it not for her, Luca might never have taken such risks in the first place.

Daniela

Daniela is Luca's mother and the one who tries to keep him in the more sheltered life she thinks is safe. While her behavior can seem overbearing at times, she does it all out of love, and that is clear. She is certainly a better parent than some of the questionable ones in past Disney movies.

She can be hard on her son, but she also seems to recognize when she is wrong and when she needs to let him live a little. However, given that they are sea monsters and Luca wants to explore a world where they hunt sea monsters, perhaps her reactions are justified.

Massimo

Massimo with meat cleaver and mean look in Luca

When Massimo is first introduced in the movie, he is quite an intimidating figure. Giulia's fisherman father is first seen chopping the heads off fish with a giant cleaver. He also doesn't seem like the friendliest guy as he always has a mean stare and bosses the boys around.

However, it doesn't take long to see that Massimo has a kind heart under that gruff exterior. He is a loving and supportive father and becomes a very sweet father figure to Alberto as well. In the end, he is also quick to put aside his previous beliefs and immediately be accepting.

Alberto

Luca and Alberto in Luca

When Luca meets Alberto, he immediately seems like his exact opposite. He is a confident sea monster who doesn't spend too much time thinking about things and is willing to take risks. He acts as though nothing phases him, but he also proves to be a very caring friend.

Though Alberto can be a bit pushy and jealous at times, this behavior doesn't last. He is always there for Luca when he needs him, and his character development over the course of the movie makes for some of the most emotional moments in the movie.

Giulia

The story's center is very much the friendship between Luca and Alberto, but as soon as Giulia comes into the movie, she becomes just as important. For Luca, she represents someone he can explore his curiosity with but for Alberto; she represents someone who might tear his friend away from him.

However, Giulia has her own story of proving herself and standing up for her new friends. In a world filled with people attempting to overcome their own fear, Giulia is heroic and compassionate to everyone who needs it.

Luca

Luca's journey of wanting to fit in, be accepted, and learn more about the world is one that many people can likely relate to. That young and innocent approach to exploring the world for the first time makes him a character who audiences can easily cheer for.

As to be expected, he makes mistakes along the way, some of them quite hurtful. But he is always a caring person who learns what it means to be a good friend and that being accepted by your loved ones is most important.
