Just one of the many things I look forward to whenever the animation wizards at Pixar put out a new film is the short film that plays before the feature. In the past we've had shorts like Up's 'Partly Cloudy', WALL-E's 'Presto' and Ratatouille's 'Lifted', but playing in front of Pixar's latest film, Toy Story 3, is an innovative short called Day & Night (not to be confused with the Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz action film, Knight & Day).
We already know the plot of Day & Night:
When Day, a sunny fellow, encounters Night, a stranger of distinctly darker moods, sparks fly! Day and Night are frightened and suspicious of each other at first, and quickly get off on the wrong foot. But as they discover each other’s unique qualities–and come to realize that each of them offers a different window onto the same world–the friendship helps both to gain a new perspective.
However, if you still aren't clear exactly what the short will be like, here's a featurette to help you out. Don't worry, even the filmmakers find it hard to sum up in words! Check out this making-of featurette, courtesy of Pixar Planet:
Just when I think Pixar has done everything it can to surprise me, they come up with Day & Night. I love that it celebrates both traditional 2D animation and the newer 3D animation in such a clever way. The footage we've seen so far makes me very excited to see what the finished product will look like on the big-screen.
Thoughts on the making-of Day & Night featurette? What do you think of the concept behind the short film?
You can see the Day & Night short when it plays before Toy Story 3 when it opens on June 18th, 2010.
