Pitch Perfect 3 Production Teaser Takes the Bellas Global

Pitch Perfect

The musical comedy sequel Pitch Perfect 3 is hitting theaters this December, and Universal Pictures has released a behind-the-scenes trailer taking fans of the franchise through production of the third film in the trilogy.

With the original Pitch Perfect becoming a surprise hit in 2012 and Pitch Perfect 2 earning almost $300 million dollars on a minuscule budget in 2015, the series making it to a third film is no surprise. The second sequel reunited the Barden Bellas of Acapella and a few new faces for a four-month shoot lasting from January to April.

The film's production has released a two-and-a-half minute video chronicling the highlights of the shoot. There's no official footage from the film, but plenty of looks behind the scenes at major moments from the upcoming film. Not much is known about the story, but the video teases a "global tour" for the Bellas that somehow involves an action sequence on a boat, scene-stealer Rebel Wilson fending off a pair of attacking German Shepherds, and, of course, some massive musical performances.

There seems to be a bittersweet aura to the video that signals the end of the Bellas journey. Pitch Perfect 2 saw all of the major cast members except for Steinfeld graduate from college, so it makes sense that the film will cover themes of growing up and moving on. It appears that this will be the final film in the franchise, or at the very least the last film with this cast of characters. The video shares moments of the Bellas wrapping production and the tears that followed.

Major returning cast members include the aforementioned Wilson, as well as Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Hailee Steinfeld, Elizabeth Banks, and John Michael Higgins. Series newcomers include Orange is the New Black's Ruby Rose, John Lithgow, and rapper DJ Khaled, the latter two making appearances in the production video. Step Up: All In director Trish Sie will take over for Banks, who directed Pitch Perfect 2 but took a step back to a producing and acting role this time around.

Pitch Perfect 3 was originally scheduled for a summer release, first dated to go against Dunkirk on July 21, and then The Dark Tower on August 4. The date was moved again to December 22, serving as counter-programming a week after Star Wars: the Last Jedi. It also goes up against the Dwayne Johnson/Kevin Hart comedy Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
