Elizabeth Banks returning to direct Pitch Perfect 3

The first poster for Pitch Perfect 3 is here, ahead of a trailer for the Bellas' next round of a cappella competition on the global stage arriving online. The musical/comedy Pitch Perfect franchise began in 2012 and features a core cast that includes Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Brittany Snow, among many others. OK Go music video director Trish Sie is calling the shots on Pitch Perfect 3, after Pitch Perfect series costar/producer and Pitch Perfect 2 director, Elizabeth Banks had to take a pass due to scheduling conflicts.

Banks is still producing and appearing in Pitch Perfect 3 (after making her directorial debut on Pitch Perfect 2), and the rest of the cast and crew is already beginning to come together in a big way. New additions to the cast this time around include John Lithgow and Star Wars: The Clone Wars voice actor Matt Lanter, in addition to Orange is the New Black breakout Ruby Rose. It remains to be seen how many, if any, of those newcomers will appear in the first Pitch Perfect 3 trailer.

Depicted against a black and white backdrop and photograph of the assembled cast, the bold yellow lettering on the Pitch Perfect 3 poster reads, "Last Call, Pitches," provides for a coy nod to the Pitch Perfect 2 poster tagline, "We're Back, Pitches." You can check out the poster below, with the trailer confirmed to debut tomorrow during VidCon 2017 on Saturday, June 24th.

The Pitch Perfect franchise has quickly made a name for itself, starting with Pitch Perfect securing $115 million worldwide in 2012 - only to be superseded by the sequel in 2015, which grossed $287 million around the globe and beat out the likes of fellow musical/comedy record holder School of Rock, at $131.3 million. It remains to be seen how successful Pitch Perfect 3 is at the worldwide box office by comparison, given that Pitch Perfect 2 was not as well-liked in general as its predecessor - and thus, enthusiasm for the series has seemingly dwindled a bit, since the first Pitch Perfect was released.

Series screenwriter Kay Cannon is returning on Pitch Perfect 3, meaning fans can expect the film to feature the same mix of humor and heart as its predecessors. The third Pitch Perfect will be facing competition from such heavy-hitters as Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi and the Dwayne Johnson-led Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle during this year's winter holiday season, but there may yet prove to be enough room for the Bellas to thrive at the box office again, too.
