This Week:

Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hooper plan to reunite for The Danish Girl; Tomas Alfredson will direct The Snowman; Hailee Steinfeld joins Pitch Perfect 2; Morena Baccarin and Allison Janney say yes to Spy; and Green Acres is headed to the big screen.

Les Miserables star Eddie Redmayne and director Tom Hooper will reunite for The Danish Girl, based on the book by David Ebershoff.

The source material tells the true story of Einar Wegener, a Danish painter who underwent a surgical procedure to become a woman in the 1930s. Redmayne will play Wegenar but the role of his wife Gerda, herself a famous Danish painter, has yet to be cast.

It depends on how fast the project gets going, but it sounds like The Danish Girl will be Hooper’s first film since Les Miserables. And based on the material it sounds like the film could be another Oscar contender.

With Martin Scorsese officially out as director of The Snowman, Let the Right One In helmer Tomas Alfredson has taken his place.

Tomas Alfredson Direct The Snowman Movie News Wrap Up: Pitch Perfect 2, Green Acres and More

Alfredson will also work on his own draft of The Snowman script, which adapts the novel of the same name by Jo Nesbo. The Snowman is one of a series of books following the character of Harry Hole, a take-charge Norwegian detective who is best likened to James Patterson’s leading man, Alex Cross. In this particular outing, Harry Hole is on the case of a missing woman whose scarf is found on a snowman.

After making a big splash with Let the Right One In, Alfredson followed that up with an adaptation of John Le Carre’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy featuring Gary Oldman as iconic British spy George Smiley. Alfredson had hoped to follow up Tinker Tailor with an adaptation of Le Carre’s next novel, Smiley’s People, but it appears The Snowman is next.

True Grit and Ender’s Game star Hailee Steinfeld has joined the cast of Pitch Perfect 2.

Hailee Steinfeld Cast Pitch Perfect 2 Movie News Wrap Up: Pitch Perfect 2, Green Acres and More

The original Pitch Perfect was a huge hit for Universal, grossing over $100 million off a $15 million budget and pushing soundtrack sales to over 1 million units. Its follow-up should be an even bigger draw with original stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson set to reprise their roles, and producer/actor Elizabeth Banks slated to direct.

At this point, however, we only know that the up-and-coming Steinfeld is on-board for a role, but the nature of that role is unclear. For that matter, we don’t know if Steinfeld will be singing with the Barden Bellas, although it seems fair to assume she will.

Morena Baccarin (Homeland) and Allison Janney (Mom) have signed on to co-star in the upcoming comedy Spy.

Morena Baccarin and Allison Janey Cast Spy Movie News Wrap Up: Pitch Perfect 2, Green Acres and More

Spy (formerly Susan Cooper) features comedic leading lady and big-time box office draw Melissa McCarthy as a CIA analyst who ventures into the field for the first time. Baccarin and Janney will apparently play fellow spies, although Baccarin’s character is billed as “deadly” while Janney’s is described as “tough but with a biting sense of humor.”

Slated for a May 2015 release, Spy reteams McCarthy with her Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig. The two have spun nothing but box office gold since joining forces and we don’t expect that to change given Spy‘s ever-growing, star-studded cast. In addition to those previously named, Spy‘s cast also includes Jason Statham, Jude Law, and Rose Byrne.

Green Acres is adding its name to the growing list of old TV shows looking to find new life in film.

Green Acres Movie Movie News Wrap Up: Pitch Perfect 2, Green Acres and More

Director Richard L. Bare, who helmed his fair share of Green Acres TV episodes, has acquired the rights to the property and plans to shop it around. First and foremost, Bare hopes to get a feature film adaptation going, but he’s also considering a Broadway play version as well.

The original Green Acres followed a high society New York couple (played by Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor) who decide to trade city life for farm life. The show was on the air for 6 seasons, as well as a made-for-TV reunion movie in 1990.
