Where else can you find sneaky scallywags, one-legged buccaneers, and Kermit the Frog - other than by watching Muppet Treasure Island, that is? The answer is today's collection of promo photos from this summer's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and November's The Muppets.
Walt Disney Pictures is the financial body behind both of these anticipated pics, which look to deliver plenty of steel-clashing duels, explosions upon the high sea, humorous one-liners, and spontaneous song & dance numbers. We leave it to you to deduct which movie will offer what.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hits theaters first and will unleash Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow - now on an expedition to locate the Fountain of Youth - in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D as well. Director Rob Marshall's high-seas adventure looks quite epic in scale and scope, which makes it an ideal candidate for viewing in the really big screen, multi-dimensional format. The official trailer was fun enough and only featured a few gimmicky moments of pirates jabbing cutlasses out at the audience, which was also a relief.
While franchise veterans Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley won't be returning for the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean, Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush is back as Depp's treacherous former first mate, Hector Barbossa - now, a slightly more respectable sailor who serves King George II and is missing one of his legs for not-yet specified reasons. Presumably that'll be explained in On Stranger Tides, but who knows, maybe Disney is saving it for the fifth PotC.

First it was known as The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time. Then its title was slightly altered to The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made. Now co-screenwriter/star Jason Segel's upcoming Muppet movie is simply being referred to as... The Muppets.
Official labels aside, this new cinematic trip with Jim Henson's beloved sock puppets finds Segel, his onscreen girlfriend (Amy Adams), and a nondescript, brown, iPhone-armed Muppet named Walter (who will not be voiced by Paul Rudd, contrary to popular belief) on a quest to reunite Kermit, Miss Piggy, and the rest of the original Muppet Show crew to save their old production studio from being destroyed.
The Muppets will feature loads of celebrity cameos, including appearances by the likes of the HFPA's favorite comedian, Ricky Gervais, along with other intentionally funny types like Billy Crystal and Wanda Sykes; potential Expendables 2 star Jean-Claude Van Damme; along with pop sensation Lady Gaga and Foo Fighter member David Grohl, who serves as a replacement drummer for Electric Mayhem while Animal is out of commission (we won't spoil the reason for his absence just yet).
