The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has entertained audiences for many years. From Captain Jack Sparrow, an Oscar-nominated character, to the memorable quotes and heists pulled off by the characters, the series has become beloved among fans. However, beyond the quotes, action, and love stories, lies its impressive costuming.
Fans probably recall the red dress that Captain Barbossa forced Elizabeth to wear in the first film, as well as Jack Sparrow's easily recognizable pirate costume. Jack may have been a troublemaker, but he always looked cool. None of the characters would be the same if not for their unforgettable outfits, which displayed their personalities and, in Elizabeth's case, were occasionally painful.
The Mini Pirate
Jack the monkey is hilarious. Jack Sparrow certainly doesn't love him, but audiences do. Plus, mini-Jack comes with his own adorable outfit, fit for the mini-pirate that he is. Not unlike Jack Sparrow, who is a character with many hidden details, the monkey is always up for mischief and swindling, and is quite witty, as well.
His outfit is a little nicer than Jack Sparrow's and looks a little loose, but that clearly allows for him to move around easily without feeling constricted by his clothing. A monkey having an outfit, to begin with, shows that he is an equal among his fellow pirates, and may even outrank a few, given its aristocratic look. Either way, audiences wouldn't mind having mini-Jack's outfit for their own beloved pet.
Carina's Blue Dress
Carina's blue dress in Dead Men Tell No Tales was pretty and certainly looked great on her. Carina is intelligent -- she's ahead of her time, fighting for women to have more freedom and the right to pursue education, but she's accused as a witch.
Her dress may not be the best for trying to outrun people, given she escaped prison prior to being sentenced to death, however, it's certainly appropriate for her academic pursuits, as it's perfect for meetings, lectures and the like. Its simple blue color makes her blue eyes pop, it has a modest cut, and it looks heavy, so for Carina to be able to run in it is quite impressive.
Will's Blacksmith Outfit
Before he was a pirate, Will Turner had a socially respectable profession as a blacksmith in Port Royal. He certainly looked better than his disheveled employer, even though Will was the one doing all the work that his employer took credit for.
Will never had a hair out of place, and always looked proper and professional in a vest, white shirt with puffy sleeves, pants and boots, even as he dropped off a sword at Elizabeth's home at the beginning of the first film. His outfit may not be the most comfortable for working or for fighting pirates in, but Will dressed above and beyond his role as a blacksmith, likely to impress Elizabeth.
Salazar's Uniform
In life, Captain Armando Salazar of the Spanish Royal Navy was ruthless, merciless, and certainly terrifying and intimidating all at once. In death, all those qualities and more are amplified, given his new look. His uniform still provides an air of authority, with the added look of death emphasizing his brutal nature. The uniform shows all that Salazar has accomplished, and how seriously he takes his job -- plus, it emphasizes his belief that pirates are below him.
Once so neat and tidy, Salazar's look in death is quite scary and disheveled, as he no longer cares about his position or his looks, but rather, his quest for vengeance on pirates, especially the sarcastic and witty Jack Sparrow, who had some of the greatest lines in the franchise.
Elizabeth's Pajamas
Elizabeth Swann comes from an aristocratic background, given her father is the Governor of Port Royal. This comes with a beautiful house, and of course, plenty of gorgeous outfits, including nightgowns.
This billowing white nightgown, accompanied by the floral-decorated robe, was elegant and stylish. However, it was impractical considering it's meant for sleeping in, and not for trying to run away from pirates, as she was in the franchise's first film. In fact, the corsets Keira Knightley had to wear for this role automatically made her act more refined, one of the many hidden things about Elizabeth Swann that everyone missed.
Will's Pirate Outfit
Will's character had changed a lot from fan-favorite The Curse of the Black Pearl to At World's End. From blacksmith to pirate to Captain of The Flying Dutchman, Will's life changed greatly, as did his wardrobe. In the above picture, as Will bids the love of his life goodbye, he's wearing a loose red shirt and a bandana -- his own take on the pirate look.
However, Will's look somewhat resembles that of Jack's, which wouldn't be surprising considering everything he and Jack had been through together, as some of Jack's influence was bound to rub off on Will. Nonetheless, Will opting for bold colors is interesting, considering he was about to embark on a new life under the sea, where no one would necessarily notice his bold outfit.
Sao Feng's Outfit
The Chinese pirate Sao Feng is memorable for his storyline in the third Pirates of the Caribbean film, but his outfit deserves mention, as well. It demands attention, he wears it well, and it displays the authority and power that Sao Feng possesses.
It's an outfit that allows for quick movement should Sao Feng need to engage in a fight, and it's certainly stylish. It looks like a designer robe with decorative accents added to the collar and the belt and is especially regal with its symbols. Audiences likely wouldn't mind owning a version of it to add to their own wardrobes.
Angelica's Pirate Outfit
Angelica certainly knows how to color coordinate and accessorize her pirate outfit. She's only made one appearance thus far in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but audiences wouldn't mind seeing more of her, and her outfits, of course. She's created a pirate look all for herself and made it more feminine-looking at the same time.
It's also practical given her line of work and certainly makes her look like the badass that she is. She has billowing sleeves, boots, and pants, with what appears to be a leather under-bust corset that both complements her body and probably comes in handy in a fight if anyone tries to take a stab at her, as it provides a certain amount of protection.
Elizabeth's Red Dress
During her captivity aboard The Black Pearl, in the first film, Elizabeth is given a choice: either take the red dress that Barbossa wants her to wear and dine with him or else eat naked alongside the crew. Unsurprisingly, she picked the former. Elizabeth did look stunning in it, the red complementing her, and clearly, it was a far more comfortable dress than the one Elizabeth had had to wear the day before that caused her to be unable to breathe.
Onboard with a bunch of pirates, Elizabeth's fashion was likely the least of her worries, but still, audiences certainly remember the red dress. Elizabeth was later forced to give the dress back when she and Jack were marooned on an island, but considering her reaction to the dress, to begin with, she likely wasn't sad to see it go. While beautiful, the dress would have also been scandalous, given the amount of cleavage it shows.
Jack Sparrow's Pirate Outfit
From moment one, Jack knew how to make an entrance. His outfit says that he's cool and laidback. He's 100 percent himself, all the time. Though a bit disheveled-looking, Jack easily pulls off the look, from the bandana and the long coat to the hair beads and boots. He's not just a pirate, but a captain, and his outfit portrays that authority and rank. Plus, it gives the impression that Jack is worldly, considering he has a little bit of everything, from the leather stitched vest to the hair beads, and obviously put together his pirate outfit over time.
Though others say Jack Sparrow is the worst pirate they've ever met, he is more proud of the fact that they have at least heard of him. Jack knows how to accessorize, too, from the necessary swords to the compass and his hat.
