Filled with ferocious adventures, glorious sea battles, whirlwind characters, and swashbuckling pirates, the beloved Pirates Of The Caribbean series contains some of the best pirate films of the 21st century.

Throughout the films, there are only a very few main characters: Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp), Will Turner (played by Orlando Bloom), and Elizabeth Swann (played by Keira Knightley). However, it is undeniable that many other characters play pivotal parts in the films.

What makes the series so great is its diverse, comedic, and well-thought-out characters. As for their D&D alignments, the spectrum is unreal, whilst being unusually chaotic. After all, they are pirates.

Davy Jones: Chaotic Evil

Davy Jones

With a nickname like "Devil Of The Seas," it's hard to see Davy Jones as anything but evil. Problem is, he's just that. He is fearsome and ruthless as both a pirate and a person, never being afraid to kill or steal to get what he wants. One of Davy Jones' most important traits is his ship, The Flying Dutchman, in which he takes people's souls and traps them to work as crew on his ship. It does not get much more evil than that.

The reason Jones is chaotic is that, although he does most of this because of love, he enjoys what he is doing and the power that comes with it. As a pirate and with the way his morals seem to be, Davy Jones has to be chaotic evil.

James Norrington: Lawful Neutral/ Neutral

James Norrington looks intensely at something in Pirates of the Caribbean

Although he was originally intended to only be in The Curse of the Black Pearl, James Norrington was so beloved by fans that he was brought back and continued to appear in Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. This character is an interesting one. On one hand, it's clear that he would be neutral, as he is seen acting well around his superiors; however, interestingly enough, he is also a betrayer, as he does almost nothing to actually save Elizabeth.

On the other hand, Norrington becomes a pirate on the Black Pearl in Dead Man's Chest. Ultimately, Norrington begins as a Lawful neutral character then transitions to just Neutral as he doesn't change his morals, just his attitude towards pirates.

Bootstrap Bill Turner: Chaotic Good

Bootstrap Bill in PotC

This man is almost good through and through. Before debuting, Bill Turner had already given his son the chance at a better and uncursed life by sending him away, as well as forcing the rest of the crew who mutinied to live under a horrific curse.

Bill is loyal, kind, and loves his son endlessly. This character is undeniably good and is portrayed as such when he seems to be the most human of all of Davy Jones' cursed crew. The only reason Bill is chaotic is because of his occupation as well as the way he goes about achieving what he wants.

Will Turner: Neutral Good

Will Turner is happy to break the law or uphold it, as long as he can protect the ones he loves. What makes this character so great is the lengths he would go for love. Will turns into a pirate and risks execution just to save Elizabeth, even continuing after learning that she is going to marry James Norrington.

The reason Will is not just neutral is that every bad thing he does is for the good of the people. Ultimately, he can't be classed as chaotic but, since he becomes a pirate, he can hardly be called lawful either.

Blackbeard: Neutral Evil

Blackbeard

Blackbeard is perhaps one of the most feared and horrific pirates ever. He is a murderer and thief who enslaves people and manipulates anyone he can into doing horrific deads in his name. This man is so evil, one of his most famous quotes is "if I don't kill a man every now and then, they forget who I am."

Everything about Blackbeard is evil, he murders people just so others remember his name and has no regard for any life what so ever. What makes him different from the other antagonists of the series is the way he thinks. Although he is a pirate who is obsessed and driven by greed, Blackbeard is calculating and plans far too much to simply be deemed as chaotic.

Joshamee Gibbs: Chaotic Good

Due to their morals, most pirates are chaotic. Driven by personal greed and safety, they are usually selfish. This doesn't always mean they are bad, though. Gibbs is loyal, kind, and forgiving. Through everything Jack Sparrow's first mate goes through, Gibbs remains loyal to Jack, only leaving him to protect his crew, which was the right thing to do.

Once a sailor for the Royal Navy, Gibbs was always good. Even though he would leave to become a pirate, he kept his good morals and kind persona.

Hector Barbossa: Chaotic Evil

Hector Barbossa in Pirates of the Caribbean

The original antagonist, Barbossa was Jack Sparrow's first mate and the first to mutiny and leave Jack on an island to die. Throughout the series, Barbossa never has any trouble killing to get what he wants. Barbossa's selfishness and greed caused the curse he was placed under in the first place, while he also instigated a mutiny, which is among the worst acts a pirate can do.

Although he ends up sacrificing himself for his daughter in the end, Barbossa ultimately cannot be excused for all the lives lost by his hand. He tries to redeem himself but when looking back at his horrific past, it just doesn't cut it.

Elizabeth Swann: Neutral Good

Elizabeth Swann

Similar to Will Turner, Elizabeth does everything for love and the good of people. She is not chaotic like a pirate, and her fascination towards pirates is as far as it goes in the chaotic sense.

Although it should be noted that Elizabeth could be classed as chaotic due to her irresponsible actions, ultimately, she dances between chaotic and lawful too much to be either of the two. However, she is undeniably good at heart which grants her the alignment of neutral good.

Jack Sparrow: Chaotic Neutral

Jack Sparrow

If Jack Sparrow wasn't under the chaotic alignment then this series would not have been as successful as it was. Jack's crazy and unpredictable nature is central to Pirates of the Caribbean's appeal. His character is always fun to watch and cannot be compared to anyone else in the franchise.

Although he is a pirate, it would be wrong to place Jack in the evil alignment. While he is hardly evil, Jack is nowhere near good either. Underneath all the hilarity, he is still selfish and manipulative and seems to use every given opportunity to betray his allies.

Pintel & Ragetti: Chaotic Evil

Pintel and Ragetti are iconic. They are the funniest and most stupid crew members of the Black Pearl. Although they are chaotic evil, they are not evil in the same way as Barbossa. While they also mutinied against Jack Sparrow and are fine with murder, they are hardly manipulative and only seem to be capable of following orders rather than thinking for themselves.

Ultimately, these two go together and are extremely chaotic characters that provide some fantastic comedic moments throughout the movies.
