Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is sailing back into dangerous waters this year with the arrival of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth instalment in producer Jerry Bruckheimer's phenomenally success swashbuckling pirate adventure series. Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki), Dead Men Tell No Tales features a mix of new and familiar faces, with the new additions including Javier Bardem as the ghostly Capitán Salazar, Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) as an astronomer called Carina, and even an appearance by former Beatle Paul McCartney.
This latest entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise continues the theme of Jack Sparrow being pursued by people that he has annoyed in one way or another, with Salazar - freshly escaped from the Bermuda Triangle - on a mission to exterminate every living pirate on the sea. The only weapon capable of stopping Salazar is the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but can Jack get to it before Salazar catches up with him?
Let's take a look at the returning characters who were seen in this new trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Will Turner Returns
Perhaps the biggest reveal of the trailer was Orlando Bloom's Will Turner, carrying out his Netherworld duties with a suitably creepy new look. Fans will recall that Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End saw Will committed to ten years of duty as the Captain of the Flying Dutchman, but in a post-credits scene he returns to the shore to greet Elizabeth and to meet his son for the first time. At World's End was released in 2007, meaning that Dead Men Tell No Tales will mark a full decade since the third movie's release. If the movies follow a similar timeline to the real-world gap between their releases, then Will may be coming to the end of his tenure as psychopomp of the sea. Will's mutations are a little worrisome, since his predecessor Davy Jones only begun to transform into a sea monster after shirking his official duties - recovering the souls of those who died at sea and recruiting them for service on the Flying Dutchman - in favor of becoming an angry tyrant. Does Will's new look mean that he, too, has failed to fulfil his assigned role?
Barbossa is Back
Pirates of the Caribbean's original undead pirate captain, Hector Barbossa, has appeared in all four movies so far and is back once again in Dead Men Tell No Tales. Barbossa seems to be doing very well for himself, with flamboyant clothes and a voluptuous curly wig (either that or that's his real hair, which would be even more impressive). However, the Super Bowl LI trailer sees Barbossa in trouble as Salazar's crew boards the Queen Anne's Revenge, which is also seen skirting a massive rift in the middle of the ocean and possibly being destroyed altogether. Will Barbossa and Jack be forced back into an alliance - the living against the dead?
Hunt for the Sparrow
Of course, no Pirates of the Caribbean movie would be complete without that sassy, swashbuckling, back-stabbing scoundrel himself: Captain Jack Sparrow. In stark contrast to Barbossa's dancy clothes and hair, Jack returns looking like he crawled out of a sewer, declares it's all part of a "pirate's life," and offers a salute with a bottle of rum. When last we saw him, at the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Jack was back in possession of his precious ship, the Black Pearl, but the Pearl had been shrunken down to fit inside a bottle. Whether Jack has since managed to restore the Pearl to her former glory, or whether his unkempt appearance is indicative of an ongoing quest to get his ship back to full size, remains to be seen. Given Salazar's pursuit of him, Jack may be better off on dry land... but he's never been known to avoid risk.
With Barbossa, Will and Jack all back in the mix, it will be interesting to see which other major characters from the past might return as well.
