[UPDATE: Piranha 3DD will be straight-to-DVD in the UK; Theatrically released in the US - see below for details.]

Rumors that Piranha 3DD (get it?) was going straight to DVD have been debunkedThe sequel to 2010's successful remake,  Piranha 3D, had already been delayed from its November 2011 release date when a British DVD site suddenly had it listed for a straight-to-DVD bow. Naturally,  rumors began circulating that the movie would not receive a theatrical release.

However, director John Gulager (Feast) has put all of those rumors to rest. Gulager has cited safety reasons for shooting being delayed, but the movie is still apparently slated for theatrical release. Here are Gulager's words:

"The main problem was this thing called “Winter”. There was no way we could ask anyone to strip down and jump into the water. Besides being inhumane and stupid, even with ‘movie magic’, it would be too dangerous. So we waited until it was warm enough to shoot but not so late that our main location became unavailable (open to the public) and started shooting in real 3D on April 25th, 2011.

This is good news for fans of Piranha 3D and those itching for the sequel. Releasing a film that had been shot in 3D straight to DVD would be a terrible idea, given that most homes do not own a 3D capable TV yet. Piranha 3D was one of Dimension Films' surprise hits of 2010, and was arguably one of the few "good use of 3D" movies to come out.

UPDATE: As Dread Central reports, Piranha 3DD will be released straight-to-DVD in the UK, but still released theatrically in the U.S. As the film's co-writer, Patrick Melton, told Daily Dead

Over the summer, Gulager edited and picked up a few shots around Los Angeles. This is typical of every movie made. Scenes, jokes, and kills were simply enhanced to make the movie more of an event. About a month ago, it was tested and scored very well. So well the studio gave us more money to enhance the FX. Soon, it’ll be done and ready for a theatrical release. Because of the “Spring Break vibe” in the film, spring was the obvious time to open it. And because Dimension Films financed the movie and owns the movie, they call the shots on when it’s released worldwide.

So, that’s the long and short of it. All good. In theaters this spring. See you then.”

Directed by Alejadro Aja (The Hills Have Eyes), and written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, Piranha 3D was a huge success and whet everyone's appetite, pun intended, for a sequel. David Hasselhoff and Garey Busey have been added to the cast this time - so take that as you will.

Here’s the official synopsis for Piranha 3DD:

Having awoken from their spring break extravaganza at Lake Victoria, the swarm heads upstream where they look to make a meal out of Big Wet, a local water park where when it comes to fun, nobody does it wetter! Though they came to get wet, get loaded and get some, the staff and patrons get more than they bargained for when they must face the fiercest, most bloodthirsty piranhas yet. Lead by the strong-willed, studious Maddy and her friends, Barry and Kyle, the trio must dive in and take on these man-eating creatures using every ounce of their being…but can they be stopped? Shot in 3-D and feauturing Esquire Magazine’s “2011 Sexiest Woman Alive,” Katrina Bowden and the return of Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer and Ving Rhames alongside fresh bait Gary Busey and David Hasselhoff, the film that took an $80 Million bite out of the box office is back for more…only this time it has double the terror and double the D!

Piranha 3DD, directed by John Gulager, is slated to come out sometime in spring 2012.
