We know what you horror movie fans out there have been clamoring for: sequels to Piranha 3D and The Amityville Horror! (Sarcasm alert!) Sure, both franchises have already spawned sequels – but those sequels were for the old, dusty versions of these horror not-so-classics – we need sequels to the newer-but-not-better remakes!
Well, sorry to start your week off with bad news, horror fans, but it seems as though both Piranha 3DD and The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes have been bumped from their respective release dates, and are now facing an uncertain future.
Piranha 3DD has been through several release date changes: the sequel was originally slated as a summer 2011 release, but then got bumped to November 23rd of this year (to better position it for awards season – kidding!). Now, Dimension Films has reneged on the fall date as well, stranding the film in the limbo of being an unspecified “2012” release. Guess we’ll have to wait even longer to once again see 3D sexual gratuity and D-list stars getting devoured by vicious CGI fish. Bummer.
We haven’t reported much on The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes because…well, we were waiting to see if it ever turned into a film that would bear discussion. Ever since the 2005 remake with Ryan Reynolds and Chloe Moretz, there’s been talk of several new Amityville projects – including yet another remake, and this Lost Tapes sequel. The sequel won out, obviously – but “won” becomes an ironic term, now that the film has been yanked from its January 27, 2012 release date. It is also speculated that Lost Tapes could be released later in 2012, but don’t bet on it just yet.
Double bummer… guess we’ll have to wait even longer to see the found-footage story described in this synopsis from Dread Central:
The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes showcases the events after the time of the original The Amityville Horrorbook and movie through found footage dating back to 1976. An ambitious female television news intern, on the verge of breaking the most famous haunted house case in the world, leads a team of journalists, clergymen and paranormal researchers into an investigation of the bizarre events that will come to be known as The Amityville Horror … only to unwittingly open a door to the unreal that she may never be able to close.
Who is shedding tears about these two projects sitting on the shelf for the foreseeable future? Let us know your thoughts in the comments – if you can put aside your grief long enough to do so.
Keep your eye on the 2012 calendar for both Piranha 3DD and The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes. We can’t guarantee that they’re make it to a theater near you, but we’ll keep you posted if we find out they will.
