I know what you are thinking, “Piranha 3D has nothing going for it. It’s going to be nothing more than NetFlix/SyFy Channel material a week after opening.” The movie certainly doesn’t have the odds of box office success in its favor: it’s a remake, it’s in 3D, it’s opening late August and it’s a hard-R horror film with much sex, violence and gore. None of those things screams “Box Office Phenomenon!”
Yet I find myself strangely wanting to see Piranha 3D succeed at the box office. Could it be because I’m a fan of Elisabeth Shue and Ving Rhames and I just want to see these two have some sort of rebirth in their careers? I can’t be sure.
We got a good look at the amount of gore director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) is planning to put in the film last year with some behind the scenes pictures. Since then, the only news related to Piranha 3D was a bootleg version of the 3D trailer, which played in front of last year’s mega-moneymaker, Avatar. We don’t post bootleg videos on Screen Rant, so we’ve been patiently waiting in the wings, hoping for the actual trailer to drop.
Good news! It dropped last night. Enjoy it below:
It’s a good-looking teaser but with the August release date quickly approaching, The Weinstein Company really needs to step up their promotional game and release a full length trailer for Piranha 3D if they want people to pack the theaters to see it. In fact, this teaser isn’t even available on the film's official website and I didn’t even receive a notification through email telling me it was out, even though I signed up to receive announcements regarding the film.
Here is the official synopsis from The Weinstein Company’s website for Piranha 3D:
Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for Spring Break, a riot of sun and drunken fun. But this year, there's something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers; a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area's new razor-toothed residents.
Piranha 3D stars Jessica Szohr (Gossip Girl), Steven R. McQueen (The Vampire Diaries), Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O'Connell, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss and Christopher Lloyd.
