In 2013, Pikmin 3 released on the Wii U, and is still widely considered to be one of the greatest games on that console. Now, seven years later, Pikmin 3 Deluxe is arriving on the Nintendo Switch. Because it's been so long since a mainline Pikmin game released, a whole generation of Nintendo fans may be unfamiliar with the little aliens. Here's everything to know about these odd critters before the game releases later this month.

There are various types of Pikmin, but five primary varieties appear in Pikmin 3's story mode. Other versions, like the White and Purple species from Pikmin 2, appear in the game's Mission Mode, however. These aliens can be used for a number of tasks, as the games are action platformers with real-time strategy elements and puzzle solving.

While fans of the series wait for the much-anticipated Pikmin 4 to arrive, the new Pikmin 3 Deluxe should introduce the series to a whole new generation of gamers. The first species that players will find in Pikmin 3 Deluxe will be the Red Pikmin. These Red Pikmin are fireproof, which mean they can be used in a variety of fire-related ways. They also have incredibly sharp noses, which they use for attacking enemies. Because of this, Red Pikmin make great fighters and can deal lots of damage.

The second variety is Blue Pikmin. Like Red Pikmin being fireproof, Blue Pikmin are waterproof. They're able to swim and survive in water, which means Blue Pikmin are instrumental in making it through large rivers and other large bodies of water in the game. Rounding out this elemental trifecta are Yellow Pikmin, which can't be shocked. They also have large ears, which means they can fly through the air more when they're thrown.

Two new species making their debut in Pikmin 3 are Rock Pikmin and Winged Pikmin. Rock Pikmin look like chunks of granite with googly eyes. They take over the power role of Purple Pikmin seen in the previous games, meaning the Rock Pikmin can crash through enemy defenses with their hard bodies. The Winged Pikmin, also known as Pink Pikmin, are weak. However, they have the unique ability to fly, which means they're vital in collecting goodies in Pikmin 3. While these are the five varieties seen in the main story, Pikmin 3 Deluxe comes with DLC and new content, which means there may even be new species of Pikmin introduced. The confirmed list for Pikmin 3 Deluxe's story looks like:

  • Red Pikmin
  • Blue Pikmin
  • Yellow Pikmin
  • Rock Pikmin
  • Winged Pikmin

As long-time fans eagerly await Pikmin 3 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch, newcomers to the franchise will surely be interested in knowing more about these alien creatures. While other kinds of Pikmin appear, these are the five primary species of Pikmin featured in the game's main story.
