Former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan and his son Sean are set to star together for the first time in a crime drama called Bonded for writer/director Mo Ramchandani.
According to The Wrap, the Brosnans will play cops in the film which is:
"An Oliver Twist"-esque story follows a Mexican teenager named Jesus who, after the death of his mother, is sold by his father and smuggled into America, where he's forced to work as a bonded slave laborer in a Los Angeles sweatshop. While imprisoned there, he befriends a young woman named Elena. But when she is claimed by a sex trafficker, Jesus must make a daring escape in order to rescue her."
Sean Brosnan will produce the true story for his old friend Ramchandani, alongside his father's Irish DreamTime production company and Joe Dain .
Ramchandani is quoted as saying:
"I want to make movies that not only entertain people, but also empower, educate and inspire them."
I have to say that from the above synopsis it would appear that this isn't going to be an upbeat story and I hope that Ramchandani has the necessary skills as a writer and director to pull this off. Bonded could either come down on the side of being a gritty and harrowing story of courage, or a little trite. Fingers crossed that it is the former and not the latter.
It's good to see the younger Brosnan following in his father's producing footsteps - it also good to see him picking a film which isn't a surefire commercial property. I can only assume that the Brosnan duo will have supporting roles in the film, as the plot appears to be focused on the characters of Jesus and Elena. Although, as details are sparse - that could be far from the case. I also suspect that there might be a title change to stop any Bond comparisons.
Bonded starts shooting in September.
