It looked like Walter Hill’s crime thriller St. Vincent had fallen by the wayside when original star Mickey Rourke dropped out of the project - following his Oscar nominated performance in The Wrestler.
Well that’s far from the case, as former James Bond star, Pierce Brosnan, has slipped into the vacated role. St. Vincent is up for grabs at the Cannes Film Festival with shooting starting on July 12th in Detroit.
Billy Bob Thornton, Maria Bello, who starred with Brosnan in Butterfly on A Wheel (or Shattered depending on where you caught it), as well as Giovanni Ribisi have also joined the St. Vincent cast.
According to Variety:
"St. Vincent follows a hitman (Brosnan) who goes undercover as a priest to get close to his target, a gangland traitor (Thornton). The hitman soon discovers that playing the good guy is more dangerous than being a mob killer.”
It’s good to see Hill back in the saddle directing again, as his last big screen effort was Undisputed in 2002. He knows how to assemble a tense action-thriller with strong (and at times blatant) western undertones which can be seen in films like 48 Hours, Last Man Standing and The Long Riders.
As for Brosnan, the actor is developing an interesting and varied post-Bond career. His recent role in Roman Polanski’s superb thriller The Ghost showed the actor tinkering with his image - stepping into the shoes of an embattled British Prime Minister. The new St. Vincent role is kindred in spirit to his hit-man performance in the under-rated The Matador.
Brosnan’s business partner Beau St. Clair will produce St. Vincent through their Irish Dreamtime branch alongside Claudio Castravelli and Jon Turtle.
What do you think of Brosnan stepping in for Rourke? Think you'll check out St. Vincent?
No official release date has been set for St Vincent but we'll keep you posted as we hear more.
