The Borg Queen (Annie Wersching) will return in Star Trek: Picard season 2 and it's no surprise that the cyborg ruler of the Borg Collective wants Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) again. But Star Trek: Picard season 2 will also incorporate time travel, thanks to the omnipotent Q (John de Lancie) also coming back to torment Picard, and this could be the key to how Jean-Luc can finally defeat the Borg Queen for good.

Star Trek: The Next Generation introduced the Borg as the ultimate enemy of the United Federation of Planets but the Borg Queen herself was introduced in Star Trek: First Contact. Unforgettably portrayed by Alice Krige, the Borg Queen attempted to assimilate Earth in the 21st century via time travel before Captain Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise-E stopped her. But the Borg Queen also had another agenda: She wanted to turn Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) and make the android her counterpart. On TNG, Picard was assimilated and turned into Locutus of Borg to be a spokesman for the Borg, but Star Trek: First Contact retconned the Borg Queen's motivation into wanting a cyborg mate to help her rule the Collective. The Borg Queen later returned in Star Trek: Voyager, this time played by Krige and Susannah Thompson, but the cybernetic monarch also met her match in Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the crew of the USS Voyager.

It's no surprise the Borg Queen is returning considering how Star Trek: Picard is steeped in Borg lore; season 1 saw Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) join the cast and the series dealt with the Romulans' Borg Reclamation Project where Soji (Isa Briones), who is also synthetic, was a researcher. In addition, the Borg Reclamation Project's director was Hugh (Jonathan Del Arco), who was a reclaimed Borg just like Seven. Seeing Borg saved from the Collective gave Picard some solace from his past as Locutus, but the Borg Queen is obviously still a threat. It makes sense that the Borg Queen would want to claim Picard again because he died and was reborn with a synthetic body, which would make him even more 'attractive' to the Borg Queen the way Data was in Star Trek: First Contact.

Star Trek Picard Finale Seven of Nine

Indeed, besides the fact that Picard is now essentially an android, the Borg Queen would also be very interested in re-assimilating Seven of Nine, who escaped her clutches in the Delta Quadrant during Star Trek: Voyager. Meanwhile, Soji, Data's synthetic 'daughter', is another potential target for the Borg Queen and quite possibly the real prize for the Queen. The Borg exist to assimilate organic races to further the perfection of their species, but Soji is just one of an entire planet of synthetic 'children' of Data, and Picard is now one of those synthetics as well. It makes sense the Borg Queen would want to assimilate the synthetics of the planet Copellius and evolve the technology of the Borg race to perhaps look as human as Soji instead of the Borg's terrifying cyborg form.

But Star Trek: Picard season 2 could see Jean-Luc finally put an end to the Borg Queen thanks to time travel. Picard season 2 will see Jean-Luc and his motley crew try to repair their greatest regrets from the past, and Picard has no greater regret than being turned into Locutus, which continues to haunt him. Time travel, thanks to Q, could mean Picard actually stopping the Borg Queen before she becomes the ruler of the cyborg race - and this could possibly incorporate the origin of the Borg Queen Star Trek: Enterprise season 5 planned to delve into before the show was canceled.

It's also vital that Picard face the Borg Queen one more time and finally put an end to his greatest adversary. The return of the Borg Queen, with a new human form in Annie Wersching, is an exciting chance for Star Trek: Picard to finally put an end to the threat of the Borg, which would also explain why the Borg no longer seems to be an issue in the 32nd-century era of Star Trek: Discovery.
