Photograph Trailer: Critics Are Charmed By This Old-School Romance

Sanya Malhotra and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Photograph movie

Amazon has released a trailer for its romantic dramedy, Photograph. Written and directed by acclaimed Indian filmmaker Ritesh Batra (The Lunchbox), the film stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Rafiullah or "Rafi", a Mumbai photographer who's relentlessly being pressured by his grandmother to get married. In an attempt to appease her (lest his grandmother stop taking her medication), Rafi convinces a shy stranger named Miloni Shah (Sanya Malhotra) to pose as his fiancée for a visit with his family. However, the pair end up spending more time together than expected and begin to form a surprising connection, in spite of their differing outlooks.

Photograph was picked up by Amazon Studios earlier this year, just ahead of its screening at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. The movie is currently set to hit U.S. theaters in two months on May 17, where it will open against english-language Hollywood offerings like John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum and The Sun is Also a Star. As such, the film's marketing is getting underway ahead of then.

Amazon Studios has released an official trailer for Photograph online, ahead of its premiere in theaters over the forthcoming weeks. You can check it out, below.

The trailer includes lots of positive pull-quotes from the early reviews for Photograph, following its debut at Sundance back in January. Overall, the response was as positive as these quotes suggest, with critics singling out Batra's subtle direction and his leads' sensitive performances as the film's greatest strengths. At the same time, some reviewers feel that the movie is too quiet and slow-moving for its own good, to the point where it becomes less meditative and more, well, boring. On the whole, though, critics seemed to admire the old-fashioned romance at the heart of the film, and the storyline comes off feeling equally touching and good-natured in the Photograph trailer.

For Amazon, Photograph is part of an eclectic collection of movies that the studio plans to release in the first half of 2019, along with director Mike Leigh's historical drama Peterloo and Nisha Ganatra's workplace comedy Late Night. The studio has so far specialized in relatively niche films and enjoyed award season success in the past with titles like Manchester by the Sea and The Big Sick. Last year, however, they struggled to gain much traction on the awards circuit, despite making a big push with arthouse offerings like You Were Never Really Here, Beautiful Boy, and Suspiria. Still, it's encouraging to see that they plan to continue releasing a wide selection of films in the U.S., including non-American movies like Photograph.
