Phasmophobia has released a huge update including new map locations, custom difficulties, and a ghost overhaul. Phasmophobia has had several updates since its initial launch in 2020; for instance, the recent Cursed Possessions update for Phasmophobia introduced the Tortured Voodoo Doll item, which unlocks new avenues for interaction with ghosts.

Phasmophobia currently has 24 unique ghosts, each with their own identifiers and abilities. Before the Apocalypse update there were 10 locations, ranging from small locations like the Bleasdale Farmhouse to large areas like the intimidating Asylum. Each map offers their own advantages and disadvantages depending on which ghost players may encounter and what equipment the players bring on their ghost hunt. Being able to ask the correct questions for Phasmophobia's Spirit Box and strategically set up cameras are key to being successful in a ghost hunt.

Kinetic Games announced on the Phasmophobia Twitter account that the Apocalypse update is now live, launching new maps, updates to ghost types, and custom difficulty settings. A new map, Sunny Meadows Mental Institution, was added, featuring distinctive rooms like a morgue. A restricted version of Sunny Meadows was also introduced, limiting the explorable area so that people who enjoy smaller maps can still give it a try. This has also been done to Maple Lodge Campsite, the haunted campsite from Phasmophobia's Nightmare update. It now features an alternative smaller version called Camp Woodwind.

Phasmophobia Apocalypse Update Adds Custom Difficulty

Phasmophobia's ghosts have been reworked to produce no sound when the player moves 20 meters away. Throwing power has been increased, and the frequency with which ghosts will throw things has been increased during a hunt. Individual ghosts have been updated so that the Oni’s throw has now been provided to the Poltergeist, and in turn the Oni has received new traits. The Demon’s rare ability has been made more reliable, and there have been adjustments to the Jinn’s sanity drain. Players will also now have the ability to create custom difficulties by adjusting ghost interactions, hunts, player stats, and contract details.

These difficulty customization options will allow players across skill levels to enjoy the game at their own pace. Fans can turn the game into a pure ghost investigating experience by making it easier to identify Phasmophobia's haunted rooms and removing the hunt mechanic, or they can lean into the horror by making ghosts more dangerous and removing the grace period between hunts, making them far more dangerous to the players.

Phasmophobia's Apocalypse update allows horror players to curate the experience to their liking. If a player wants to experience a truly apocalyptic game, with ghost events and hunts constantly keeping them on their toes, they now have the ability to do so, or they can have a more tranquil ghost-hunting experience which allows them to explore every nook and cranny of the new Sunny Meadows Mental Institution before diving into the deep end. Players will want to stay up to date on strategies for identifying Phasmophobia ghosts like the Onryo or Oni when exploring the large new map to avoid being killed in the hunt.
