John Legend will be producing an upcoming film based on the classic Phantom of the Opera tale, simply titled Phantom. The Phantom of the Opera story originally saw a masked murderer haunt a popular Paris opera house, where the Phantom falls in love with a talented understudy and kills all who dare get in his way. The Phantom of the Opera tale was first introduced in a 1909 Gaston Leroux novel of the same name and has seen several adaptations over the years, from a 1925 silent film to multiple popular Broadway musicals, with the latest musical being titled Phantom as well.

It has been announced via Deadline that Universal has acquired a modern musical adaption of the classic Phantom of the Opera story, titled Phantom. Singer John Legend will be producing the upcoming project alongside Emmy-nominated producer Harvey Mason Jr. and Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co. partner, Mike Jackson. Phantom will step outside of Paris’ city limits and into the French Quarters of New Orleans with a spec script written by John Fusco. Legend’s other Get Lifted Film Co. partner, Ty Stiklorius, is on board as the project’s executive producer.
