Warning: contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #83!

Marvel's Spider-Man is officially cosplaying as himself after a fight gone horribly wrong. Peter Parker's life is a seemingly-endless series of tragedies, calamities and world-ending disasters, but now something truly terrible has befallen the webslinger: he's lost his Spider-Man suit. Thus, in Amazing Spider-Man #83, Peter does the truly unthinkable and cosplays as his own alter ego.

Peter Parker is in terrible pain, and rightfully so; an attack by the U-Foes left Peter bedridden in a New York hospital. He's incredibly weak, his spider-sense is on high alert (and Peter seemingly can't control it), and his Spider-Man suit was heavily damaged in the attack. While on drugs to dull his pain, Peter inadvertently orders a battle-damaged Spider-Man replica suit online, along with replica webshooters. He's horrified when he comes to his senses - he can't afford these high-priced items - but they turn out to be beneficial in the end.

Finally able to walk, Peter begins his usual pattern of making poor life choices by scaling the wall in his newly-acquired Spider-Man suit. He's cold and still quite sick but is feeling much better mentally otherwise. He examines the webshooter and to his astonishment, the device is actually functional. Peter surmises the shooter is salvaged from an old Scarlet Spider costume and gets to work fixing the weapon.

Peter often spends his days unhappy (rightfully so, considering everything that has happened in his life), but as Spider-Man, he feel truly at home. Wearing the suit, even it it was an official cosplay suit and not an armored, radiation-shielded suit (like Ben Reilly's uniform), makes Peter relax. Peter is always noticeably more confident and cocky as Spider-Man, jokes and all. This is similar to the dichotomy between Bruce Wayne and Batman, except Bruce considers his own face to be the mask, whereas Peter always knows Spider-Man is a disguise and not his actual self-image. Still, after so many years wearing the costume, it can be hard for Peter to separate the two.

Peter is just one of three Spider-Men patrolling New York. Ben Reilly is sponsored by the Beyond Corporation, and Miles Morales is the so-called Brooklyn Spider-Man, but Peter has held the mantle for the longest time. Unfortunately, Peter is now wearing a cosplay version of his own suit, equipped with webshooters that are not his own. Spider-Man may be cosplaying himself, but the challenges he faces are all too real.
