Jude Law revealed how he apologized to the Peter Pan & Wendy cast after dealing with them strictly in character as Captain James Hook on set. The new live-action adaptation of the classic story will be based on the original 1904 play and the 1953 animated feature film by Disney. The movie will star Law alongside newcomer Alexander Molony, who will play Peter Pan, and Ever Anderson as Wendy Darling.

While interviewed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Law talked about his experience on Peter Pan & Wendy, which premieres April 28th on Disney+. Law revealed how he and director David Lowery worked to make Law and his character, Captain Hook, synonymous in young actors' minds. The British actor explained that this made it easier for the children to act like they really hated Hook. Check out the full quote and video below (begins at 5:55):

"David Lowery, our wonderful director, had the idea of really trying to encourage them not to see me when I wasn't Hook, so I just stayed as Hook the whole time, which was an opportunity just to be really scary and mean. (Laughs) Sounds kind of awful. But I didn't suddenly want to be talking to a little six-year-old as Jude and then suddenly it's like 'You hate me, I'm Hook, I'm Hook.' So instead I just stuck as Hook. And yeah, a lot of the reactions you see in the film are their reactions to me for the first time or as the man himself. They met Jude at the end, and I did what every adult should do to bribe children, I hired an ice cream van. I drove it on site, gave out ice cream. Nothing like chocolate ice cream to persuade a child you're alright."

What To Expect From Jude Law's Captain Hook

Law also talked about how he had to learn sword fighting for the film, but since Captain Hook's eponymous hook is on the character's right hand, he had to master it with his weaker left hand. Law is far from the first actor to play the iconic villainous role, so his portrayal will be compared to other live-action Hooks, such as Dustin Hoffman and Jason Isaacs.

It's clear from the clips and trailers that have already been released that Law's Captain Hook is a little less flashy and bombastic in his appearance, possibly hinting at a more grounded portrayal of Captain Hook. Law's penchant for villainous comedy will be on full display, as evidenced by a clip of Hook walking over one of his crewmates before revealing a nice bit of comedic chemistry Law had with Jim Gaffigan, who plays his loyal first mate, Mr. Smee.

While traditionally the characters of Captain Hook and Wendy's father, George Darling, are played by the same actor, Peter Pan & Wendy eschewed that decision, which allowed Law to remain in character as Hook for the entirety of filming. While Law is previously known for leading as a protagonist, he's put together some memorable performances as villains in films, such as Captain Marvel, where he played Yon-Rogg, and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, where he portrayed Vortigern. Hence, Law fits right in his scary display as Captain Hook.
